Hannah Ziegellaub Obituary

Hannah Ziegellaub Died May 29, 2006, at 61, in New York City, of complications from multiple sclerosis. Hannah was born in New York City but spent much of her childhood abroad, in France, Austria, Israel, and Germany, while her father worked with Jewish relief organizations after the war. Fluent in English, German, and French, Hannah was a consummate visual artist, an activist passionately committed to social justice, a person of boundless curiosity, and an extraordinary friend. Hannah lived in Berkeley and Oakland from the early 1970s to the early 1990s, when she moved to Albuquerque. She was a compelling and vivacious subject in Allie Light and Irving Saraf's Emmy award-winning documentary "Dialogues with Madwomen." She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael Brussell, and her parents, Dora and Detch Ziegellaub. Hannah is survived by her devoted sister, Mimi Ziegellaub; her brother-in-law Richard Eichler; her loving niece, Emmy; and by her extended family and her legion of friends whose sorrow travels the globe. A memorial for Hannah will be held Friday evening, June 19, in the East Bay. For details, please call (510) 420-8057.

Hannah was my fellow participant in the film Dialogues With Madwomen. While I was not close to her, I love all the women in the film, so I certainly love her. I am grateful for her honesty, intellect and humor, things that help make the film as powerful as it is. I am very sad to hear that she is gone, and my heart goes out to all those who played larger roles in her life than I did.

Hannah and I met and became friends in Cambridge Mass in the sixties. Our paths crossed again in California and again in New Mexico and who knows? My sincere thoughts are with family and friends.
