Harriet Kwong Obituary

Harriet Dong Kwong Harriet Dong Kwong, 99, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2008. Harriet was born on November 6, 1908 in Pajaro, CA, to Ten Song Dong and Jennie Jue Dong. She was the sixth child in a close-knit family of nine children (Eugene, Collin, Ella, Alice, Hubert, Hattie, Lily, Emma and Marian). Her family was a source of support and love throughout her life. Harriet grew up in Pajaro and Watsonville, attending high school in Watsonville. She was active in sports, especially tennis. After high school, she graduated from business college. She later moved to San Francisco and lived the remainder of her life in the Bay Area. In 1945, she married Kwang Lim Kwong. Together they enjoyed dancing, golfing, playing bridge and traveling. Her three stepchildren, Edith, Robert and Corinne became an important part of her life. Her 12 grandchildren have been blessed to have received her loving attention. During her many years in San Francisco, she remained very close to her brothers and sisters, living with her brother, Hubert, and his wife, Esther, for 19 years. She was very involved in the lives of her many cherished nephews and nieces and their families. She was an avid bridge player, achieving the rank of life master. Her devotion to bridge and eagerness to share her love of the game with others led her to join in the founding of the Chinese-American Bridge Club. She was an indispensable support and inspiration to the club and its members for many years. Harriet loved traveling and made many trips to Australia, the birthplace of her husband. Her husband's relatives founded the Kwong Sue Duk Foundation to preserve the history of the family and maintain family ties. Harriet was very involved in the foundation, attending many of the foundation's family reunions and hosting family members when they visited the United States. Harriet also enjoyed playing golf, dancing, crocheting and photographing family events. She loved family get-togethers and parties and was often among those last to leave. She was an active member of the Community Baptist Church in San Mateo. For the last seven years of her life, she lived at Atria Hillsdale in San Mateo, a senior residential care facility, where she was well cared for & made many friends. She is survived by her sisters, Dr. Emma Dong and Dr. Marian Lowe; children, Mr. Robert Kwong and Mrs.Corinne Kwong Fung, 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, her goddaughter Ms. Jeannette Wei, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families. Harriet was a vibrant, happy person. She had a remarkable memory and could recall people, names, and dates with amazing facility. Her positive attitude brought sunshine to her wide circle of friends and family. Memorial Service will be held Sat., Jan. 26, 4pm at Community Baptist Church, 15 S. Humboldt St., San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Com-munity Baptist Church (www.cbcsm.org) or the charity of your choice.
