Henry Chang Obituary

CHANG, Henry E. "Hank" - March 28, 1921 - Sept. 29, 2005 Peacefully passed over to Glory in his own home in Oakland at age 84. Hank retired at age 82 from his real estate company Chang and Associates due to declining health. Born in Oakland, he proudly served seven years in the US Navy, worked briefly as a butcher, then started his own business with three gas stations in Oakland Chinatown. He was an active real estate agent and broker for over 40 years. In the 1960s he worked with the Cosmopolitan Lions Club to host several children's fishing contests at Lake Merritt. He also was a member of the East Bay Sportman's Club. Hank loved to fish and photos of his catches lined his kitchen, living room and the hallways. With his innate sense of serenity, he surrounded his house with bamboo and orchids. And his love of cooking was not daunted by his medically prescribed diet. He vigorously revised his old recipes like a conqueror going to battle. He is survived by his four children: Erica of Honolulu, Lance (Melody) of Cupertino, Ramona of Danville, Mark (Juliann) of Castro Valley; four grand-children: Blythe Hardeman, Peter, Robert, Matthew; the mother of his children: Barbara Jeong Chang; sisters, Margaret Fung, May Chow, Marie Fong (Lyman); sisters-in-law: Eva Chang, Ruby Chang; brothers-in-law, David Jeong (Gwen), Richard Jeong; and many nieces and nephews Hank was a surrogate grandpa to many of his friend's children. A generous and thoughtful friend. He never forgot your birthday, always purchased school supplies in August for the young children in his life and would show up at your door with a gift of produce that he found on sale. His children miss a dad who was always "there for them." And although we celebrate his new life in spirit form, all will miss his quick wit and his reflexive response to those in need. Viewing between 5:00pm - 8:00pm Friday Oct. 7, 2005, Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave, Oakland, CA 510-654-0123. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life service at Chapel of the Chimes, Saturday, October 8, 2005, 1pm.
