Herbert Rusten Obituary

Herbert E. von Rusten Longtime resident of Oakland Herbert passed away suddenly on July 5, 2008 at his home in Oakland. He was 72 years of age. Herbert grew up in Oakland and attended St. Joseph Catholic High School in Alameda, the University of San Francisco, and graduated from Creighton University on June 3, 1959 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery. After obtaining his doctoral degree, he spent four years in the Army as a dentist with the rank of captain. Following his discharge, Herbert opened his dental practice in Alameda and for 47 years was devoted to his many patients. His habit was also to have lunch daily with his fellow dentists at the Elks Club a few doors from his office. Additionally Herbert served on the board of trustees of the University of SF from 1999 to 2005. Herbert is survived by his wife, Claudette; stepdaughters, Dawn Grundler and Elizabeth Stone; son-in-law, David Grundler; and grandchildren, Ella, Christopher, Patrick, Trevor, Brittany, and Emma whom he loved with a passion. They will always cherish the love and time they had with him; Herbert's favorite pastime was to sit on the couch with them reading, coloring, and encouraging them. Friends are invited to a Memorial Service Sat., July 26, 11:30am at St. Joseph Basilica Church in Alameda. A reception will follow at the Elk's Club.
