Herbert Winslow Obituary

Herbert H. Winslow, Jr.

April 16, 1929 - July 14, 2014

Beloved husband, father, grandfather and long –time San Francisco resident, Herbert H. Winslow, Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on July 14, 2014. He was 85 years old. His devoted and loving wife of 53 years, Ingeborg, was at his side when he passed away.

Herbert was born April 16, 1929 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Herbert and Isabel Winslow. He belonged to an old American family that traced its roots back to the Mayflower. Herbert Winslow was a graduate of Exeter Academy and Yale University (1952). At Yale he went by the nickname "Scott" and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. It was also at Yale where he developed his passion for the study of American history, becoming an expert especially in U.S. military history, able to recount in detail battles from the Civil War and both World Wars. Following Yale, Herbert served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in military intelligence. After being honorably discharged, Herbert moved to San Francisco, where he eventually met his wife, Ingeborg, and then began his lifetime career in insurance. As a successful insurance broker, he served as a long-time employee of Fireman's Fund and subsequently A. Mason Blodgett & Associates.

Together, Herbert and Ingeborg raised their two sons, Christian and Alexander, in San Francisco where both boys attended local schools. He was a passionate and committed father and encouraged his boys to excel in education and sports. Herbert mentored Christian in the skills required to succeed in the professional world and was extremely proud when Christian followed his footsteps to Yale. With Alexander, Herbert instilled a commitment to hard work on the tennis court, spending countless hours driving him to and from tennis lessons and tournaments, and a love for their local sports teams, the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. Herbert also gave his sons a deep appreciation for reading, travel, culture and fine food.

After seeing their boys through their respective college graduations, Herbert and Ingeborg subsequently enjoyed their retirement years traveling the world together, particularly on cruises and on extended trips to Europe. Herbert was blessed in his later years to be a grandfather to his two grandsons, Caden and Zachary, and delighted in sharing his toy soldier collection with them.

Herbert was known for his good sense of humor, his gentle demeanor, and his dignified, gentlemanly manner. Herbert is beloved by his surviving wife, Ingeborg Winslow, and sons, Christian and Alexander Winslow, daughter-in-law Patricia Reilly, his grandchildren Caden and Zachary Winslow, and his extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 22, 11:00 am at Fernwood Funeral Home, 301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley, CA 94941. Phone: 415.383.7100 www.fernwoodcemetery.com
