Herschel passed away peacefully at home just after midnight on May 16, 2016. His wife Joan and daughter Amy Solomon were by his side. The days preceding his death he was surrounded by his loving family, including his daughters Rachel Kardos and Dore Bowen Solomon, grandchildren Max and Madeline Kardos and Thora Djuna Astudottir Solomon, and daughter-in-law Asta Sveinsdottir.
Herschel's optimism, generosity, and the warmth with which he treated others helped him accomplish his goals and touch the lives of many. Herschel grew up in the small Pennsylvania town of Philipsburg, served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army/Air Force during WWII, went to University of Pittsburgh on the GI Bill, attended Chicago Medical School and, while in Chicago, met Joan Neuman, the woman of his dreams. Herschel and Joan married and, with his growing family, he moved to the Bay Area to attend UCSF Medical School and pursue his practice in Radiology, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine.
Herschel believed in science and the pursuit of knowledge. He loved being a physician, and he treated his patients with concern and dignity while also keeping abreast of the newest technological developments in his field. At the same time, he enjoyed participating in all that life has to offer. He was an avid reader on a broad range of subjects and he enjoyed meeting people from diverse backgrounds. He had a keen sense of humor. His wife, Joan, was the apple of his eye, and together they enjoyed many activities with a close circle of friends and family, including walks and hikes in the Bay Area, travel abroad and throughout the United States, and attending cultural events, particularly theater, music, and the arts.
Friends and family are invited to a Funeral Service for Herschel at Sinai Memorial Chapel, 1501 Divisadero Street, San Francisco, on Wednesday, May 18th at 1pm. The chapel doors open at noon. Interment to follow at Home of Peace Cemetery, Colma.
