Ilza Veith

Ilza Veith, Ph.D, 101, of Tiburon, California passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2013. Ilza was born in Ledwigshafen, Germany on May 13, 1912. Ilza attended medical schools in Geneva and Vienna, and received her Ph.D. in History of Medicine from Johns Hopkins University in 1947, the first such degree issued by the University. Ilza was an Associate Professor in History of Medicine at the University of Chicago 1949-63, Professor of History of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco 1964-79, and then Professor Emerita. Ilza married Hans von Valentini Veith on October 20, 1935 and were married until his death on March 9, 1991. Ilza was the author of many books and articles on the history of medicine, including her major work of the translation of the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine first published in 1949. Ilza received many honors over the years for her outstanding achievements in the history of medicine, including an honorary doctor of medicine degree from Juntendo University in Japan. In 1964 Ilza suffered a severe stroke which left her hemiplegic for the rest of her life. Ilza touched many lives in many countries over her long and productive life. She will be greatly missed personally and professionally by many. Private services were held in Tiburon.
