James Brady Obituary

James Robert Brady
04/08/1940 - 03/08/2026
Jim passed away unexpectedly, just a month shy of his 86th birthday. A native San Franciscan, he was born to Patrick Joseph Brady and Mary Agnes May.
Jim grew up in the city, attending Mission Dolores Grammar School and graduating from St. Ignatius in 1959, where he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. After earning his bachelor's from USF, he began working as a social worker at the Working Boys Home for Catholic youth. He then dedicated more than 30 years of service as an Adult Probation Officer for the City and County of San Francisco.
Jim was an avid reader. He loved history, biographies and other non-fiction. His favorite novel was "Lonesome Dove." He was a loyal fan of the 49ers and the Giants, and he found simple joy waking up to the sounds of birds singing in the yard and morning greetings of his beloved dog, Coco.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Lynne. Their union changed his life forever, as he embraced the roles of stepfather and grandfather. Lynne will always remember him as "the nicest, sweetest man in the world." He was preceded in death by his brother, Tom. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Montano and her husband, Al; sisters-in-law, Rosalinda Brady and Holly Huebel; and stepchildren, Brooke Toohey (Peter) and Chris Bushell (Pam). He was a doting grandfather to Addison and Emery Toohey and Jack Bushnell. He has also left behind many nieces, nephews and cousins that he was very close to.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church, in Larkspur, on March 27th, at 10 a.m., with a celebration of life to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society.
