James Harkins Obituary

HARKINS, James Joseph - 1953-July 24, 2005, is survived by his daughters, Hilary and Mackenzie; his mother, Helen; and his sisters, Mary and Karen. He died peacefully after a very courageous battle against lymphoma. As a young man, Jim enjoyed very prestigious sports and academic careers. He attended high school at Nichols School in Buffalo, New York. He was captain of the football and baseball teams. In recognition of his great talent, Jim was inducted into the Nichols Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. At Williams, Jim won both four varsity letters and was co-captain of the hockey team. Williams College recognized his great intellect by awarding him the prestigious Tyng Scholarship. Jim also made his mark in college as a lover of fun and parties. Everyone knew "Hark". He attended Harvard Business School, where he graduated in 1977. Jim moved to San Francisco to work for Crocker Bank. Most recently, he worked at Morgan Stanley as a financial adviser. Jim adored his daughters. Music brought him great joy and he loved being a mix master. He also made a mean margarita. He will be missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held in Buffalo, New York in August and a reception will be held in Orinda on Saturday, July 30.

Jimmy was one of those darn guys that was gifted at everything he did. And yet he never took himself seriously, he knew how to have a great time, he knew how to live life. He was a class act, I am thankful to have had him for a friend. I miss him very much.

Jimmy was an old, dear friend who I had not seen in several years but always felt close to him. I have the fondest memories of Jim during his days at Harvard and from frequent trips we took together with family and friends. I will always treasure his kindness and caring and he will forever be in my heart.

I'll never forget the day he mixed CD's for our team. He enjoyed being called "Sir Hark-A-Lot" the mix master on the wheels of steel. He was very kind and made us laugh throughout the day.

I'll never forget all the great summers we had when I visited Buffalo. "Jimo" taught me to love sports and wild Canadian roller coasters! He was a special cousin. Love, "Suey"

Jim was a one of a kind and thoughtful man. He will be missed but not forgotten. I think of him every time I listen to my beautifully mixed CD he gave me.
