HAWKINS, James W – Died April 2nd (2014) at home. He was 72 years old. Dr. Hawkins was born in Michigan where he grew up in East Lansing. He was the only child of Henry and Eleanor Hawkins who predeceased him by many years. He graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, with a B.A. degree in 1964 and received his M.D. degree at Case Western Reserve University in 1968. He came to San Francisco for four years of training in psychiatry at the California Pacific Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco. He practiced geriatric and medical psychiatry for years at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco and at the CA Palo Alto Health Care System. He retired from the practice of medicine in 2008. Dr. Hawkins had a long standing wish to be remembered as a physician, a teacher and a humanitarian. He is survived by his domestic partner and spouse of many years, Mr. Chikara Abe. Donation in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association for Dr. Hawkins specialized in the treatment of that disease from 1974 until his retirement. His ashes will be scattered over the Marin Headlands from which San Francisco can be viewed.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
I lived next door to Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins, who always spoke of Jim with great love and pride, and of Mr. Abe with genuine respect. Peace!
