James Patrick Mannion passed away on August 28th, in San Francisco, California, preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Nora Mannion, natives of Clifden, County Galway, Ireland, and his brother, Thomas P. Mannion.
He is survived by his former wife of 35 years, Margaret (Peggy) Mannion. Also, by his sons, John, Mike, Tom, and Jim, and by his daughters-in-law, Mary, Kelly, Meredith, and Karen.
He was 'proud papa' to thirteen grandchildren - Sean, Kathleen, Megan, Claire, Aidan, Brian, Nora, Kieran, Brenna, David, Colin, Annie, and Ryan, and three great-grandchildren - Sawyer, Lennon, and Tatum.
Also, survived by many cousins in the United States and Ireland.
He was employed by the City of San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department for over 35 years, with the last 25 years at Lincoln Park Golf Course. He was a long-time member, and former Board Member of Local 261 Laborer's International Union. He was also a Class A Life Member of the Northern California Golf Course Superintendents Association.
He was also a long-time high school coach in Marin County. He coached football at San Rafael High School (all levels) from 1984 to 2002, and JV baseball at San Rafael from 1981 to 1996.
He also coached football at Drake and Tamalpais High School, as well as College of Marin.
Although Jim and Peggy divorced, they remained close friends, and for the last 22 years, they shared the joy of being grandparents to their 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They never missed a game.
Jim was a proud native of San Francisco, and a 56-year resident of Marin County.
He was a graduate of the University of San Francisco, a US Army Veteran, and a member of the United Irish Cultural Center.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Raphael Church in San Rafael on Monday, September 29th, at 10:30am.
