James Mercer Obituary

James Dean Mercer
05/03/1936 - 04/30/2024
James "Jim" Dean Mercer of Danville, Calif., passed away on April 30, 2024, just a few days shy of his 88th birthday.
Jim was born to H. Glenn and Alice McCool Mercer in Sacramento, Calif., on May 3, 1936. He grew up and attended school in both Santa Maria, Calif., and Burlingame, Calif. He graduated from Burlingame High School in 1953. He attended Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and graduated in 1957, with a Bachelor of Science degree. Jim received his MBA from Stanford University in 1961.
Jim's family affectionately called him "The Most Interesting Man in the World." Jim had a story about everything, especially his world travels. A year after Jim and his late wife, June, were married, they sold all of their belongings and embarked on a year long adventure around the world. Jim had a special love for Lake Tahoe. He especially loved spending time at the Tahoe cabin with family and friends. He was happiest on his boat or downhill skiing, which he did until he was 80-years young.
Jim and June moved to Lafayette, Calif., in 1966, where they raised their family. In 1992, they built a home in Alamo, Calif., and finally settled in Blackhawk Country Club in Danville in 2005.
Jim started his career at RS Electronics and then spent 12 years at Hexcel Corporation in various roles, including Director of International Marketing. In 1979, Jim and late wife, June started their own company, Omni Scientific, manufacturing and selling sports medicine devices.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Heidi Mercer Melin (Barry) of Danville; his son, Todd Christopher Mercer (Julie) of Orinda; grandchildren, Mason Melin (Courtney) of San Francisco, Sydney Melin of Seattle, Courtney Mercer and Claire Mercer both of Orinda. Jim was predeceased by his parents, H. Glenn Mercer and Alice Mercer; his brother, Richard L. Mercer and wife, June McKnight Mercer.
Jim's family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for family and friends on June 23, 2024, at Blackhawk Country Club.
