Known as Hoody, passed away July 17 at his home in Tiburon, California after living triumphantly through many battles with cancer over the past three decades. Hoody became something of a celebrity cancer fighter. In feature stories with national media like the New Yorker and ABC's 20/20, he flashed his 1,000 watt smile and self-deprecating wit. He was profiled most recently in a 2009 Marin Magazine article where he called himself the "luckiest man on earth" for all the blessings he had received from life.
He is survived by his wife Laura and five children: Andrew, Caroline "Muffin", Peter "Pistol", Caitlin "Coco", and Patrick "Patch"; his five siblings Tina (Mike) Scarrone, Teresa (John) Pfifle, Katherine (Chris) Quill, Timothy Quill, and Leonard (Denise) Quill. He is predeceased by beloved parents Leonard and Martina Quill and sister-in-law, Lisa Quill. He was the adored son-in-law to Ann and Peter Danis.
Born on June 1, 1965 in Delaware, Hoody grew up in Wilmington with his parents and five siblings. In high school, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, he traveled back to Delaware to play in his championship high school football game. He returned to New York as an aspiring actor, attending the William Esper Studio for training. He performed in off Broadway productions and was cast as an extra in more than 100 movies. Due to his treatments, he was not expected to have children, but he and Laura went on to have five. The couple moved to San Francisco in 1997, then to Tiburon in 2003. He was active at St. Hilary Catholic Church in Tiburon and St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco. He coached his kids on local sport teams and volunteered for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. His bachelor party kicked off the annual Hoody Open Golf tournament in Delaware which will be played again this September. He continued as an avid runner through all his physical setbacks.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Quill Family Education Fund (to make a confidential donation, please contact Leonard at [email protected]) and the Tiburon chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 25th from 4 to 7PM at Saint Hilary Catholic Church in Tiburon, Ca. A Funeral will also be held at Saint Hilary Church on Friday, July 26th at 11AM.

Timmy(Nibbles), Leonard, Tina, Teresa and Katy, Just heard the bad news. My heart goes out to all of you. No family should have to endured the losses that your family has, over the past few years. May that black cloud move on and leave you all be. Who knew back in the day when Hoody broke the bird bath with his head and Leonard ran into the closed sliding glass door, that we would look back fondly on those times. You are all in my thoughts and prays.

Dear Laura,
Please give your lovely children hugs for me. We as teachers all loved seeing Hoody in the classroom. What a friendly guy! I'm glad you have such a large and beautiful family...what a legacy he has left. I got to tell him I loved him before he left the school at the end of the year. And he said I love you too! I'm sorry I missed the service, but I send you my love, sweet Laura. Hope to see you and family around town.
With love and blessings,

Dear quill family,
It has been so many years since growing up together as next door neighbors on arundel drive. So many memories exist there for me and I'm sure for all of us. Jimmy...I can remember his face right now...always being the silly one...cracking wise little jokes among us all...all the time. I don't remember Jimmy, ever, without a smile on his face or not being the highlight of all our "kick the can" games. Geez, Jimmy was the fastest kid in the cul de sac and was even faster then Timmy and Katie!!!
I am so saddened to hear of Jimmy's death. After reading about jimmys life from his obituary, it doesnt surprise me to learn what a wonderful man, father, husband, brother...he was and what an inspiration he will continue to be to everyone who knew him.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you through such a difficult time.
Fondly,
Jennifer (Grant) McCurdy

Hoody always seemed original and fearless to me when we were at St. John's. My takeaway, since I heard he died, is that he truly lived well. How many of us can say the same? I know the angels led him into Paradise as he touched the Face of God. God bless all the Quills during this time of great sorrow. May your consolation be his joy. Great family.

I know we will all meet Hoody again...in the VIP section in Heaven. I plan on waiting in the long line to see his beautiful smile again! Until then, I will carry a piece of him with me--just like every lucky person who ever met him will do.
I believe Hoody Quill was an angel sent by God. Hoody's time here was meant to show us how to live our lives! I am honored and so grateful that I was blessed to have known him......

"Jesus wept." The shortest verse in the Bible. He cried at the death of his good friend, Lazarus -- because Jesus knew that death was not part of the original plan.
I wept today when I read of my friend's passing. But thankfully, because of Jesus, that's all it is for Hoody -- a "passing", not a "death".
Laura and kids, I will continue to keep you in prayer. And I will remember Hoody and his smile for the rest of my life.

No words can ease the feelings of loss, but I know in my heart that Your Dad and husband is with our Lord and Savior free of pain and extolling on his wonderful life and the blessings he enjoyed as a husband and father. You now have your own personal angel to call upon when you are struggling with your challenges as you continue to honor his legacy. He will always be with you wherever you go He will be putting in a good word for you with Jesus to prepare a special place for you with him when you are called home to God. Love Aunt Laura

To the Quill family,
I'm so very sorry for your loss.
HOOT~mon, as Big~Leo called him 8)
was one of the best people I ever had the privilege and honor of knowing.
And one of my best friends!
The following is something I posted
online Thursday after hearing of his passing.
"'QUILL!!!, ...out of my classroom!! There's two doors!,
and four windows!, ...take the quickest WAY!!!'
~ Sr. Marie Lauber
Just received some heart~breaking news, ...One of my dearest childhood friends has passed away after battling,
and beating cancer several times over the last 30yrs before finally succumbing to that awful disease!
James 'Hoody' Quill, was a true Original.
In every sense of the word!
His infectious smile and laughter brought Joy to so many!
(...except the nuns when we were acting up. 8P)
He was notorious for his crazy antics and the memories and stories I have of times w/him would fill VOLUMES!!! 8)
I'll never forget when Hood came to St. John's. We met, where else, on the football field, in 4th grade.
Hoody, John Alberta, and myself were the only 4th graders allowed to play on the 'Little' team (5th & 6th graders)
We became instant friends,
as he did with everyone he met.
Over the next six years we would have many uhhh, 'adventures'. ;)
Including, hanging out at Almart, and Mr. Pizza, Sneaking onto Delcastle Golf Course and playing a few holes,
(his house backed up to the course)
Sleepovers at the Quill's where
Big Leo would always make a KILLER breakfast!!
The Quills always made me feel like part of the family,
And since we both came from big families, it was very comfortable there. 8)
We also would go to the EG and Elsmere roller rink where I at~TEMPT~ed to pick up Hood's way with the ladies,
...to no avail. 8P
As I said, ...he was an original.
That's why everybody loved him.
He was the kind of person that when he was diagnosed w/Lymphoma just before his Senior year, and final HS football season, that you had to say,
'WHY is it always the GREAT ones who get sick?!?!?!'
I lost touch with a lot of grade/high school friends but,
Hoody was one of the ones I regret most. You'll never know how special you were to me, Buddy. But, ...we all know how special you were to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing you and how so very loved you are!!!
Your battles are over now,...rest easy.
I'll miss ya, Brother! 8'(
~ Much Love, Healing Blessings, & Peace
to the entire Quill clan and his myriad of friends. <3 )O( "

Dearest Laura, Andrew, Caroline, Peter, Coco and Patch~
Hoody was and will continue to be an inspiration to all who ever crossed his path. His joy was contagious. There are moments I will always remember, such as when you came caroling with cookies one Christmas; when Father Tarantino asked for a special over-the-top donation in a packed chapel and Hoody was the one who rose to the occasion; when he walked with a skip in his step and a beam in his smile at Andrew's football games -- one child on his back, one holding onto his leg, and another being pushed in the stroller. He was a giver in the most reverent sense of the word.
God bless you all.

I went to grade school with Hoody and we shared many many laughs. Hoody was always the center of attention, deservedly so, and it was always good clean humor. I lost touch with Hoody over the years, but every time I heard his name mentioned,in conversation, it made me smile. Hoody was a great friend and a great man!! Laura, all of hoodys kids, and the rest of the Quill's, the world lost a very special person, but you and everyone who met him already know that. I hope all the kind words, stories and outpouring of love I have seen in the past few days bring you all some peace. Hoody brought a lot of joy and it was my honor to have called him my friend and spend a very special summer with him in Dewey. I am glad you are at peace Hoody, thanks for the memories.
