Of Millbrae, California went directly to Heaven from home as a shooting star with her beloved daughter Jennifer at her side along with friend's and family after a courageous 13 month battle with Leiomyosarcoma.
She was married for 34 years to her late husband John "Jack" Cino. They renewed their vows after 25 years in 1993. They enjoyed spending family time together, had many friends and traveled.
Jane was born in Wayland, Massachusetts to the late Harriet and William Smith and was the youngest of five siblings. She graduated from Wayland High School, Massachusetts in 1961, and then went on to graduate from Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing in 1964. She was an adventurous spirited person who then traveled by car with her good friends and nursing school classmates from Massachusetts to San Francisco to establish her career in nursing. She received her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from St. Mary's of Moraga, California in the 1980's.
Jane worked for St. Luke's Hospital in the mission district of San Francisco as an outstanding registered nurse and then a well loved nurse manager of telemetry, the operating and recovery room, and emergency room for over 30 years before accepting a position in 1998 as Nurse Manager of the OR and then the Surgical Center and PACU at San Francisco General Hospital until her retirement in January of 2009. She was described as an outstanding leader who was well respected, sensitive, always kind, fair and patient with her staff but also as very serious about her work. She hired people for their heart and taught them the rest. She was vibrant, full of life and always saw the good in every situation and in everyone she worked with. She believed strongly in her nurses, in nursing education and advocated consistently for patient safety. She devoted herself to providing the highest quality of care to her patients at all times. She was well loved by her staff, colleagues, patients and all those who knew her professionally. Jane was a certified critical care registered nurse (CCRN) and maintained active membership for greater than 20 years.
She was an active member of the Italian American Citizen's Club of South San Francisco and was awarded the 2009 IACC Bocce Championship 1st place, and 2008 IACC Bocce 2nd place Champion.
Jane established "The International Dining Club" of which members would pick a country of interest to them, research the country and its culture, locate a restaurant devoted to that country and its cuisine, and then the members would go out to dinner and learn all things discovered about the culture. Her cherished friends and members described her as "one of a kind" and a "very good friend". They also said "no matter what was going on Jane always had a joke to make us laugh".
Jane loved to travel and recently traveled with her daughter and close friends to Alaska, Italy, and Hawaii. She loved to garden, play bocce ball, loved her friends, was an avid flea market treasure nights at the theater, the ocean and combing for beach glass, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She enjoyed camping in Yosemite, her condominium at Lake Tahoe and skiing. She loved stand-up comedy and had an infectious laugh. She loved to sing and have fun wherever she went. She was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and aunt and adored by her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter Jennifer McVey and her companion Paul Brennan. Her step son William Cino. Her sister Harriett and Alfred Twitchell of Issaquah, Washington, brother William Smith and the late Janet Smith of Marlboro, Massachusetts, sister Maryann and David Parr of Nahant, Massachusetts, and sister Agnes of Southern California. Josephine Marchese of Concord, California. And her many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and grand nephews. She was the very proud owner of and loved her Daschund "Mini". She was well loved and cherished and will be sadly missed by all. She was one of the good girls.
Visiting hours are from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at SNEIDER & SULLIVAN & O'CONNELL'S FUNERAL HOME, 977 So. El Camino Real in San Mateo. A celebration of Jane's life will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at New Vision Methodist Church, 450 Chadbourne Avenue in Millbrae, CA with burial immediately following at Skylawn Memorial Park, Highway 92 & Skyline Blvd. in San Mateo, CA. Donations to American Cancer Society preferred.
