Jane was a linguist who was proud of her direct New Yorker style of discussion (and argumentation). Always interesting and interested in big questions. Remembered for the intensity of her spirit and love of life, and for her perseverance through the challenges of health – she succeeded in softening her heart before it finally failed her.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I remember Jane well. I thought of her last Saturday, when I attended June McKay's memorial. Jane and I taught in June's department in the 70s, and I remember Jane's contributions to our committee to change the rules regarding lecturer status at UC.
She was smart --and funny.

This is such a shock for me (I was away and missed the memorial) I can't believe I'll be attending the Jewish film festival next week at the Albany and not see her a few rows behind me, admonishing me for not calling more often.
Jane and I met at UC's ESL department in the late 70s. I remember that I was making a futile attempt to learn to play tennis in those days, and Jane and I managed to play few pitiful games together, till we both acknowledged that tennis wasn't our sport!
In recent years Jane and I met often to talk about a book she long hoped to write on language and culture. In pursuit of that goal, she often visited my class of international grad students and held productive discussion sessions.
I will definitely miss Jane --I'll miss our discussions on language but I'll her frankness, her storytelling skills, and her wonderful sense of humor.

Saddening to hear of Dr. Falk's passing-away just within the last few weeks :-(
She certainly circulated and became actively involved in Berkeley's Jewish Community within the last dozen or so years since I first met her.
