Dr. William Glen passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, at the age of 93 in Southern California. A dedicated geologist, historian of science, and inspiring professor, Bill left behind a legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and love.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Bill earned his geology degree from Brooklyn College and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He later moved to California with his wife Marilyn, earning a Master's in paleontology from UC Berkeley and eventually a PhD in the history of science. He taught Earth Science at the College of San Mateo for four decades, and held appointments at the U.S. Geological Survey and Stanford University Press.
An early advocate for plate tectonics, his accessible writings-including The Road to Jaramillo-remain influential in geoscience and the history of science. Known for his intellectual curiosity and compassion, he inspired generations of students to think critically and embrace interdisciplinary learning.
Outside academia, Bill was a champion fencer, avid sailor, runner, biker, and lover of Baroque music. He cherished lively conversation, good meals, and time with family-especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, children Bennett, Hilary, and Jonathan; grandchildren Sasha, Adam, Jeremy, and Joshua; and great-grandchildren Wyatt and Chloe.
