Long time Mill Valley resident Jean Taylor Canepa, 80, died unexpectedly after a brief illness on Tuesday May 14, 2013. Predeceased by father Cryillus, mother Nellie, brother Donald and husband Jim Canepa. She is survived by daughter Cristine (Steve), son Douglas (Lisa), son David (Pam), & grandchildren Eugene, Nicole, Wesley, Ryan, & Patrick Canepa. Also survived by brother-in-law Robert (Reggie) Canepa, niece & nephews.
Jean was born and raised in Red Bluff, Ca. before moving to Mill Valley around the age of 8. Jean attended Park school and graduated from Tamalpais High. She met her future husband Jim Canepa of the Mill Valley Market while attending San Francisco State College. They carpooled to and from college together with other friends but Jean was always the last one Jim would drop off. Jim and Jean married in 1954 and celebrated their 50th anniversary in Italy with friends while on a hiking trip. Jean was proud of her Irish heritage but fell in love with Italy and spent many a day along side her husband hiking the Italian countryside, eating the fine food of the Mediterranean and being with friends with similar interests. She was an avid gardener and worked with Jim on their property in Glen Ellen and her "tennis court" garden here in Mill Valley. She was an active volunter at the Mill Valley library where she organizied the book sales and enjoyed working with other volunters at the library. She was very involved with Jim organizing the Mill Valley Wine and Gourmet Food tasting on the downtown plaza. She was a "birder" and enjoyed the challenge of identifing birds and their calls. Her hikes on Thursdays with her hiking group was a favorite past time.
Jean had recently moved from the family home to a smaller house near downtown Mill Valley. She wanted to be within walking distance of downtown and able to see her family at the Mill Valley Market. She was enjoying the renovation, looking forward to developing the garden, settling into her beautiful new house and her weekly Friday night martini.
Jean will be much missed by her children, grandchildren & many friends. She had the special ability to be kind to everyone she met and was beloved by many. Services are yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers a donation to The Friends of the Mill Valley Library is requested.

Dear Canepa's family,
I am really late since I didn't know Jean passed away until recently. I live on Lovell and had the pleasure of visiting her beloved garden. She offered few plants to me when she sold the house and I treasure them in my garden.
In gratitude,

Dear family,
I got to know your mother and dad on our fabulous hiking trips to Italy with Mario.
They were seasoned when I started 8 or 9 years ago. In Italy on their 50th wedding anniversary we placed the beautiful brass plaque for their anniversary on a giant tree where we were staying..
I watched Jean on her hands and knees examining a flower and Jim would take the picture. Jean loved bird watching as well, lots of different fauna and flora in Italy for Jean.to check out.
Jean was the core and soul of thursday hiking group.
Oh boy did we all love the annual crab lunch Jean put on for years and years in her warm home.
We all miss you Jean, your nice smile and gracious being.

Jean personified grace and made hard tasks appear easy. She managed the book store with velvet gloves and won the respect of everyone she interacted with.
