Joan Cassou Obituary

Joan W. Cassou Piedmont resident Joan W. Cassou, 74, died peacefully at her home on December 7th, after a year-long battle with cancer. Daughter of Elizabeth and Adolph Bleiler, older sister to Susan, Joan was born November 4th, 1936 in Oakland, California. Joan was a long time Oakland resident prior to moving to Piedmont in 1981. Joan graduated from Oakland High School, and later San Jose State University where she received her Business Degree and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1958 she married Larry Cassou a marriage that would last 46 years till his passing in 2004. As a mother, Joan made sure her two sons were self sufficient, ready for the world, grounded and had the best educational opportunities. Joan was a member of the Claremont County Club since 1972, and in the past had long time membership with Junior League and Bellevue Club. She was an avid bridge player, who always played for fun, but loved to challenge herself with tournament play. She loved to read, do the daily S.F. Chronicle crossword puzzle, play cards, work in her garden, and remain very social with a broad list of friend. She also loved her trips to Carmel, and her yearly visit to Mexico. Friends and family have fond memories of their visits to the Boulder Creek Cabin where Joan's hospitality fostered fun and relaxation during the summer months. They also remember the many relaxed parties and gatherings she hosted at the Buckeye Avenue house in Oakland. She is survived by her sons Robbie Cassou and Larry Cassou Jr., grandsons Michael and Thomas Cassou, Brother-in-law Van Burkhart and Ray Ybarra, Sister-in-law Odette Ybarra, nephews Steve Parker, and Jake Burkhart, and nieces Elizabeth Burkhart and Lynn Parker-Peterson. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at the Claremont County Club from 12-2p.m. on January 9th 2011.

I met Joan in Mexico through my wife Sally Hay. Joan was a friend of Sally's parents, John and Mable Hay before they passed. We played bridge and had many dinners in Puerto Vallarta. She had a wonderful smile and a warm heart. We'll miss her and we'll think of her often. I just wish we had more time to spend with Joan.

My Aunt Joanie and Uncle Larry were very special to me. I remember many summers in Boulder Creek. What fun we had. Aunt Joanie was always so much fun and such a great person. She always treated me so well and always made me feel welcome when I stayed with her and my cousins all summer long. I truly love both my Aunt and Uncle and cousins and have such fond memories from my chidhood. Aunt Joanie, rest in peace. Love, Steve Parker

I have nothing but wonderful memories of my Uncle Larry and Aunt Joanie. They were always a major part of my life growing up. I will never forget all the wonderful summers at their cabin in Boulder Creek, and the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners that Aunt Joanie always did a spectacular job at. I will always miss them both very much, but I know they are together now. I love you Uncle Larry and Aunt Joanie...God Bless. Love always, your niece Lynne Parker-Peterson

We bowled with Larry Cassou many years ago in Rheem, Ca. Did not get to really know Joan until we went to Mexico. We are so thankful that she was able to visit us last year before she got sick. She was a dear friend. We will miss her.

I've known Joan since kindergarten or 1st grade at Glenview. She was a wonderful person then and remained that way all through life. She will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Will miss Joan's bright smile and our
"one-on-one chats" while in Puerto Vallarta. During "Happy Hour" she would
sip Red Wine and our servings of Popcorn.
God Rest your soul Joan. Miss you, Audrae Zullo

Larry Burkhart

In reading over Joan's obituary I noticed the name of Burkhart come up. I felt a strange coincidence inasmuch as my name is Burkhart also. The German spelling of the name is Burkhardt, so perhaps there is a distant relationship. I knew Larry from Oakland High, I cannot remember Joan's maiden name. I have nice memories of my relationship with Larry, he was a happy happy man. God rest their soals.
