John Howard Miller
Born in New York on November 23, 1935, John passed away in San Francisco on December 24, 2014. A headstrong man of few words, he suffered no fools, phones or frippery; though his engaging warmth, unrestrained humor, instinctive equanimity and empiricism inspired and attracted all who met him. The son of Howard Wesley Miller, founding CFO of AIG, John followed his pop into accounting and insurance, first in Havana, Cuba and later in San Francisco, where he was a founding partner of Allen Miller & Associates. Later he delved into venture capitalism, financing novel wood and gold processing techniques. Yet finance was not his first love. After studying animal husbandry at Colorado A&M, he cut a stint in Arizona driving cattle and rafting the Grand Canyon.
John is survived by his wife Cheryl; his children Howard and Leslie; siblings Robert, Anita and Patsy; and granddaughter Nicole. Colin, his youngest son, preceded him in 2010.
