March 19, 1926 - Feb. 22, 2013
Jose Luis (Joe) Razon died peacefully in his sleep in Honolulu on February 22, 2013 with his family by his side. Joe was predeceased by the love of his life Marie Barlow, and was the cherished patriarch of his family including his loving children Theresa, Mary, Vincent, Patricia, Elizabeth, Anne Marie, and Margaret, 12 grand children, and 9 great grand children.
Joe was born in Manila, PI on March 19, 1926, the son of Capt. Vicente Razon and Paquita Torrens. He is survived by his siblings Vicente Jr., Benito and Anita Cruz in Australia, and Maria Luisa Robertson in Tennessee.
At the beginning of WWII he joined the resistance and fought against the invasion of his homeland. In 1945 he participated in "The Great Raid" helping to rescue 500 American prisoners who had endured the Bataan Death March. Later that year, as a U.S. Merchant Marine on a hospital ship, he sailed into Yokohama Harbor and walked in the Hiroshima A-bomb crater in tennis shoes and an aloha shirt until he was chased away by Life Magazine photographers in radiation suits.
Joe came to San Francisco in 1950 on a freighter, met Marie over an apple they shared, fell in love and married. Joe worked as a Union carpenter and later as a construction superintendent for 40 years, building many of San Francisco's notable homes and commercial buildings. Every summer he took his family camping at the Napa Valley Ranch Club. He retired in 1990 and spent time visiting his extended family in Hawaii and Colorado.
Joe was known for his sunny disposition and great sense of humor. He was dancing and laughing the day before he came down with the flu, and was teasing his nurses only a few hours before he passed away. His favorite Scotch was Balvenie and his favorite cigar was Tabacalera.
Services will be held in San Francisco. The Rosary will be at McAvoy & O'Hara Mortuary on Thursday March 14 at 7:00 pm. The Razon's residence was my Ohana both growing up and to this day Mr Razon kept a fatherly eye on me since my dad was a merchant marine and not home often. Memories cherished and never forgotten.

Like a father to me over my formative years growing up on 22nd Ave, Mr Razon will always be next to my father and mother as the folks who helped raise me. Never to be forgotten.
