Joseph Bernstein Obituary

Dr. Joseph Bernstein

Died June 26, 2015, at the age of 86, surrounded by his family after a short battle with congestive heart failure. Born in 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, Joe was the son of Jacob and Sadie Bernstein. After he moved with his family to Manhattan, he attended Horace Mann High School, where he excelled academically and played on an All-NYC football team. He attended Union College, where he received a bachelor's degree in three years and earned Phi Beta Kappa honors. He attended Albany Medical College and graduated in 1952 (Alpha Omega Alpha). He interned at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco before being drafted by the Army in 1953 to serve in the Korean Conflict as a flight surgeon. He mended wounds in a battalion aide station, closer to the front than the more famous MASH units. While in the service, he earned his pilot's license to fly light aircraft. He then married the love of his life, Helen Hourihan of Malone, NY, at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii in 1955. He returned from the Army to San Francisco and did an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF. Five children were born who survive him: Mark (Janie), John (Barbara), Sara (Manny) Chaves, David (Beth), Matthew (Linda); grandchildren Heather (Michael) Aspell, Daniel (Kayla) Corini, Jessica Bernstein, Michael and Nico Chaves, Jacob and Sam Bernstein; his brother, Alan, who predeceased him; his sister, Bonnie (Mel) Pomeranz; brother-in-law David (Jan) Hourihan; and many nieces and nephews. He was devoted to all of them. He served as a volunteer physician in Vietnam in 1973, teaching doctors in Da Nang techniques to avoid amputations. He loved and was very dedicated to St. Ignatius College Preparatory, which honored him and Helen with its President's Award in 1999. He served SI as Fathers' Club President and the SI football program as its team physician for 25 years. He was a Renaissance man who loved music, art, literature and golf. He had two holes-in-1 at Lake Merced Golf Club where he also served on its Board of Directors. He was honored numerous times for his work teaching orthopedic surgery at Mount Zion Hospital. He retired in 1998 and spent his retirement years golfing, doing Photoshop on the tens-of-thousands of family pictures he had taken over the years, being active in the lives of his grandchildren and playing with his two cats, PB and J. He and Helen traveled extensively and had memorable trips to Italy and Spain with Father Mario Prietto, S.J. while Joe also had the privilege of traveling to Europe with Leo La Rocca and Father Prietto as well as an East Coast trip with Brother Douglas Draper, S.J. (all of St. Ignatius). The family is grateful to Dr. & Mrs. Mark Marin for their care and friendship. They will forever appreciate Fr. Prietto, Br. Draper and Joe Vollert for their visits to Joe in his final days and the late Rev. Harry Carlin, S.J. whose friendship Joe and Helen treasure. A Remembrance will be held in the Rev. Harry V. Carlin, S.J. Commons on the campus of St. Ignatius College Preparatory, 2001 37th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94116 on Friday 24 July (Joseph's 87th birthday) at 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Bernstein Scholarship Fund at St. Ignatius College Prep.

A great witness to men in the world is marked by the wake of his actions of love on others.

Time has no bearing on the effect as seen by this post 8 year condolence. He is gone but has not disappeared. He was blessed n blessed others. A true servant to all & a beacon of hope n joy to many countless broken souls described "Dr Joe". He truly gave from his heart n his quest in life was to improve himself n assist in the quality of life for others. Witnessing whilst serving his dental needs in close to 2 decades gave me the honor to be his recipient of wisdom n share in his life experiences. At every visit he not only burnished his knowledge wisely but was also receptive to improving himself. He lived as he believed n was a compliant patient. Ever grateful for his gifting his office furniture as he retired, to our new facility as we were expanding. Ever appreciated his annual Christmas fruits to our staff. Ever impressed of how he´d remembered to award us w/ a fresh batch of biscottis at every visit. His physical being will be sorely missed but his legacy will surely live on through the many lives he skillfully taught n touched.

Ode to a great surgeon, friend, patient, friend, brother, and a man of God. You showed us how to live n serve God n others as is the greatest commandment of all.

My ears hear the words of ur voice often-Respectfully,

Terrence Lee, DDS

Doctor Bernstein was a great doctor, but an even better man. I had the pleasure of working with him while he administered medical aid and encouragement to the S.I. football players on our sidelines. He was always professional in his diagnoses of injuries and always a positive supporter of S.I.

My condolences to the Bernstein family.

Dr. Bernstein was the preeminent AME in orthopedics. He was a great host when giving deposition testimony at his office serving bagels, cakes, cookies and made everyone welcome whether one got the answers from him one wanted or not. Above all he was honest and fair in his opinions. I visited at home with him only once and he was thoroughly charming as ever. He will be missed by all who knew him both in the workers comp community and well beyond.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Bernstein's passing. I have fond memories of his great contributions to the workers' compensation community. In addition to his useful analysis, I always knew we could get a good breakfast or an afternoon snack at his many depositions. He was smart, funny and kind. I'll miss you.

Thank you for sharing the story of such a great man. What an amazing and fantastic life he lived. I know there is no way to calculate the number of people he touched along the way but one could only imagine that number would be enormous. He accomplished enough in his life to live the life of 10 great men which I believe says a lot about how he lived and how he will be remembered. May your memories of him never fade and may his great deed's live on through everyone who knew him.

Dear Bernstein Family,
Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with your family.
I had the good fortune to know first-hand how wonderful, kind and generous Dr. Bernstein was. When my son severely broke his leg a few years ago and Sara mentioned it to him, he offered to review the x-rays from our doctor. Then he personally followed up and emailed back and forth with me to provide excellent recommendations for a path forward. He was a well-known and respected Orthopedic Surgeon, and I was very touched at his kindness and generosity, both professionally and personally.
I later had a chance to stop in and meet this wonderful man to thank him in person. He was such a charming, warm and genuine person.
May he rest in peace, and may your family be comforted with the many many happy memories of a truly wonderful person that meant so much to so many.

I will never forget when I was a beginner golfer at Lake Merced Golf Club. Dr Joe gave me so much courages and advises on golfing. He played with me even though I was a slow golfer. His patience made me not to give up golfing. He was a great teacher and member. He was also a good photographer. He took good pictures for my kids at the club and the SI graduation.
