Joseph Gitin Obituary

Rabbi Joseph Gitin, D.D. In San Francisco, Aug. 16, 2010, at the age of 104, the oldest Reform Rabbi in the world. Rabbi Gitin served in Buffalo, NY, Butte, MT, Stockton, CA and as Senior Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in San Jose for over 30 years. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and an Honorary Doctorate of Humanity from Santa Clara University. He was involved in -- and often in the forefront of -- numerous interfaith, civic, humanitarian activites. He fought for the civil rights act, civil rights for the gay and lesbian communities, school integration and equal housing. His career and his life exemplified his often-stated belief that "there is but one God and we are all His children." Beloved husband of the late Rosalie Carl Gitin, loving father of David Gitin (Eileen) of Arizona and Judi Elman Harris (Gordon) of San Francisco, devoted grandfather of Joshua, Michael (deceased), Mark, Lori, and Regina Ubag and great-grandfather of Noah, Gracie, Sylvia, Aaron, Jacob and Benjamin Joseph. Grateful thanks to Coventry Park Assisted Living and to the staff who continuously dedicate themselves to the respectful, dignified and compassionate care for all their residents. Many thanks to caregivers, Louisa Magante, Vilma Bollenger and Gerry Macaraee . A public memorial service will be held in San Jose at Temple Emanu-El, 1010 University on September 14 at 10:30 a.m. Private funeral services have been held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rabbi Joseph Gitin Memorial Scholarship Fund for Interfaith Families, c/o URJ Camp Newman, 235 Montgomery St., Ste. 1120, San Francisco, CA 94014.

Rabbi Gitin was my favorite Professor during the most challenging years of my life. I would sit in a small group of students and listen to him jump back and forth from Hebrew to English versions of scripture as we studied the Psalms. His passion was to help his students understand and experience a fuller intimacy with God and the underlying culture and history behind the sacred scriptures. As he read, his gaze might lift above the immediate and as tears formed in his eyes. In this way, he was sharing his own experience and relationship with God.

Rabbi Gitin was a gentle man, a loving friend on this journey together. He was leading a silent transformation in me and adding to my own ability to relate to God in a more deeply personal way.

When I needed it most, God had put me in the presence of greatness and offered me guidance. As a result, I am still alive four decades later and strong enough to face and cope with wherever God may lead me.

Thank you for your superior examples and for sharing your tremendous faith Rabbi Gitin. My joy multiplied as I was able to share your examples when speaking to others along the way and whenever it seemed appropriate.

May God's will be made clearer to us and in this world.

Many of my childhood memories at Temple Emanu-El are of Rabbi Gitin during Friday night services, greeting us as we arrived for religious school and standing the door way listing to the choir practice. Peace be with you, Rabbi.

So many generations in my family--I loved him so much. Lots of talks at his house, in the synagogue, every life cycle in my family and so very wise. He brought so much to our community. And we all lived for the quotes at our weddings....

What a great man, certainly touched my life and was always part of the life's of those I love. He'll always be in my heart and touch me each time I walk into to the Religious School to teach on Sundays.
