Joseph Kohn After waging a courageous fight vs. the effects of lung cancer Joe at 62 years of age passed away on January 5th at home in San Rafael with loving family members at his side. Burial was held at Mt. Tam Cemetery in a beautiful mountain setting Joe was the loving brother of sister Jane Kos, children Adrienne and Alex (Melissa ) and brother Stephen (Susan), children Lori (CLIFF) Lyon, Jeffrey (Valarie,) Michael (Gail), plus many grand nieces and nephews. A proud 1974 UC Berkeley graduate with an MSW degree, Joe is the current president of the Marin chapter of the California Native Plant Society and is well known in county government circles regarding his support of clean air, water and environmental conditions. Friends and colleagues are invited to a gathering at Joe's home in San Rafael on Saturday from 1-4 PM. Call 650-375-8145. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Joe's memory to the charity or organization of your choice. Whenever you are out hiking in the woods or at the shore, think of Joe and his love of nature and wildflowers.

I just found out about Joe,s passing yesterday. I first met Joe in NYC in 1968. We had good high times there and we both moved to the Bay area and shared a lot of good times there and traveling together. Joe was always on the go always passionate about what he was doing rock n roll drugs politics wild flowers poker traveling . he was a great person to know.

Joe, we only got to meet once, but somehow I though we would get to hang out a lot more. You've been an inspiration to me in following my latest path and will continue to be.

Joe, I'm going to miss our long phone chats. From our days working together with GSAUG to the times of just cursing Apple for trying to kill our machines while we did everything we could to keep them running, we had a lot of good times and pizza during our 20+ year friendship. Maybe one day we'll meet up again for a slice and a few hands of poker.

What a sad loss. I miss Joe already so much. Thanks to him I joined "Open Space" and "CNPS". I keep fond memories of hikes with Joe when nobody else showed up. We didn't think there was bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. We talked and laughed a lot while admiring nature's amazing beauty. Joe's enthusiasm for Nature was so contagious. I learned so much from him. He was always willing to share his knowledge.--- Even so he is missed by so many of us I find comfort to know that he is free from so much emotional and physical suffering. Joe I am so thankful for wonderful memories, Muriel Jenny.

Dear familiy and friends of Joe,
This is a message from the Netherlands, Europe. Though I've never know Joe personally, we've simultaneously published an Apple II magazine in the 90's. He in the USA and me in my own tiny country. Today I read about his funeral, which was yesterday, via an Apple II fan-site. I'll keep Joe in my mind as time will go by. I wish all of you all the strength that you may need and hope that family and friends will find support with each other and possibly with God.

I remember the day I met Joe. He wasn't a nature nerd then but came out on a naturalist outing just to check it out. Before the hike was over, he was HOOKED (especially on flowers)! Every new thing May or I pointed out to him, he would exclaim OOOOOH or AAAAAAAH! It was infectious. I learned to love and look forward to Joe's enthusiasm. I will always think of him when hiking and am so very glad I got to know him and call him friend. Thanks Joe!

Joe was a good friend of mine for many years. I met him & Shiva Schulz when they lived in Tam Valley, & I lived in Mill Valley. I enjoyed many occasions in their company.
Our friendship continued through the years. After I married, when Margaret was pregnant with our daughter Kayla, we decided to give our cat Sanborn up for adoption. I was so thankful & happy when Joe & Shiva agreed to take him, as I was still able to spend time with Sanborn whenever I visited with Joe. Joe grew to love Sanborn too, which made me very happy.
Joe was an extremely opinionated & passionate person, as many of us well know. He loved talking about music, (particularly the Grateful Dead & Pink Floyd), current events, traveling & what was among his greatest passions, the environment & nature.
I had the pleasure of taking several hikes with Joe in the Mount Tam area, & will always remember them fondly.
I will also remember his backyard burgerques & his many times of hosting poker games, most often in his garage. It was always fun to show up & participate in the pandemonium that transpired there.
Margaret recalls that Joe always showed a lot of compassion regarding our family during difficult times. He always asked about our kids when in Margaret's company. Even though he didn't know Margaret well, he was always genuine & interested in knowing what was going on, & showed sympathy regarding our difficult times.
I will always remember Joe as a unique, passionate & entertaining friend, who really cared about his friends & family.

Not the Joe that I once loved so dearly! I loved you for many years, even after we stopped dating.You gave me the chance to see Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Oregon,Washington,and British Columbia for the first time; thank you, Joe.You made me a Rolling Stone fan, you took me to see Bob Dylan and Van Morrison and Jackson Browne.I did love you, Joe.
