JOSEPH SKIFFER Obituary

JOSEPH SKIFFER, JR. Aug 23, 1944 - Apr 29, 2012 On April 29, one of the Bay Area's leading African American real estate developers passed away after a long battle with diabetes. Joseph Skiffer, Jr., known to his many friends as Joe, was born on August 23, 1944, in Anguilla, Mississippi, to Joseph Skiffer, Sr., and Lillie Chew Skiffer. After spending his early childhood in Mississippi and Waterloo, Iowa, Joe moved at age ten to Chicago, Illinois. Joe attended Dunbar Vocational High School and graduated from Cooley High School in Chicago. He received his B.B.A. from Loyola University Chicago in 1970, and his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School in 1972. Joe loved to cook and enjoyed spending time fishing, playing golf, reading, learning, thinking and appreciating the little things in life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, who appreciated his loyalty and great sense of humor. He is survived by his daughter, Rachel, his son, Joseph Sebastian, and his life partner, Candace. Services will be held Monday, May 7, 2012, at 1 PM at McAvoy O'Hara Mortuary, 4545 Geary Blvd at 10th Ave. A repast will be held at 3 PM on the 2nd floor of the West Bay Conference Center, 1290 Fillmore St. at Eddy. Donations can be made to the Booker T. Washington Community Service Center at www.btwcsc.org

Candy, Dave and I have been thinking of you and Joe's children. Joe was an awesome person and has left a legacy of life memories for everyone. He was such an easy going and fun-loving person. Wish we could be there to celebrate his life with you! We will be there in spirit. Holding you close in our hearts.....

Rachel and Joseph, I too have never met you; however, I knew your father very well. He is one of my old friends. I enjoyed our debates. The last time I talked to him he said the two of you were doing great. I think Joseph was still playing basketball. He loved you two very much. Find comfort in the knowledge that your father will have an illuminating crossing and joyful reunion. The two things I admired most about Joe was he loved his family and he finished what he started. Dear Rachel and Joseph,

Although we have never met whenever your father spoke of the two you it was always with a great deal of affection and love. I considered a dear friend and I am deeply sorry for your loss. Joe was a mensch in every sense of that word. I will miss him.

Dear Candace,

I have been gone from the city of my birth for a long time but the last time I saw Joe he spoke well of you and seemed quite happy to have you in his life. I am sorry for your loss, too. Joe was a good brother and a rare human being. Bennie Martin and I just spent more than an hour on the phone talking about him and what he meant to us.

Peace and blessings to you all.
