Julian Hoff Obituary

Julian Theodore (Buz) Hoff, M.D. Passed away on April 16, 2007. After a seven month battle with acute leukemia, he died peacefully at home with the comfort of his loving family. Though his life seemed to be cut short, his was a life well-lived and he will be missed. Among the things that Buz valued most in his life were time with family and friends, teaching and helping others. He was a lover of music, literature, art, sports, and travel. He was known for his wonderful gift of humor and for being a great storyteller. He always had time to listen. He was a humble, generous, fair, and kind man who was loved by so many. His legacy is the impact on the many people he loved, helped and taught throughout his life. Dr. Julian Hoff is survived by his wife of 45 years, Diane (Shanks) Hoff; he is survived by three children, Paul Theodore Hoff M.D. (Donna Hoff, M.D.), Allison Munro Hoff M.A. and daughter, Julia Anne (Michael) Haughey M.S.W. He leaves five grandchildren, Lauren Louise Hoff, Kiersten Diane Hoff, Kathryn Munro Haughey, Kelly MacKay Haughey and Charles Theodore Haughey. He is also survived by his brother Harvey Hoff; nephew, Brian Hoff and niece, Kristin (Hoff) Sinclair and many loving cousins. Julian Theodore Hoff was born September 22, 1936 to Harvey O. and Helen B. Hoff in Boise, Idaho. He spent his childhood years in Caldwell, Idaho where he spent his time working at his father's lumber yard, playing baseball and mastering the piano. In Boy Scouts, he achieved the rank of life scout. As a senior, he was elected student body president of Caldwell High School. In 1954, he was accepted as an undergraduate to Stanford University where he received a baseball scholarship. He was accepted to medical school in 1958 at New York Hospital Cornell Medical School. During his first summer after medical school, he met his future bride, Diane Shanks, a nurse at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA. They were married in Bellport, Long Island, NY on June 3, 1962. After completing two years of general surgery training, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Japan. In 1966, he began neurosurgery training under the mentorship of Dr. Bronsen Ray at New York Hospital. During this time, he developed his life long interest in science of brain edema and stroke. Recognized as a rising star, Buz was recruited to University California San Francisco by Dr. Charles Wilson. With family in tow, the Hoff family moved west. The subsequent 11 years in San Francisco were the formative years of his academic career, during which time he was advanced to the level of full professor (1978). Numerous scholarly publications an NIH grant and numerous teaching awards, built upon his growing legend as a "triple threat"-teacher, scientist, physician. In 1981, Michigan once again beat Cal when they recruited "Buz" Hoff to chair the section of neurosurgery. Through his leadership, the division grew from a small solid core of four full-time faculty to a department with 18 clinical faculty and a fully supported laboratory with over 25 scientists investigating the causes and treatment of brain edema and stroke. The department is now recognized as one of the premier neurosurgery training programs in the country. During his 25 years as chairman, he has trained nearly 50 neurosurgeons. The academic highlights of his exceptional career include continuous funding for research from the National Institutes of Health since 1971. He was named recipient of the Senator Jacob Javitz Neuroscience Award by the NIH on two occasions, the first in 1985 and the second in 1992. He has been president of three national neurosurgery societies, was chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and a member of the Residency Review Committee for Neurosurgery. Dr. Hoff was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1999. He was awarded the Cushing Medal of the AANS in 1990 and the Grass Prize of the Society of Neurological Surgeons in 2001. He is an honorary member of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons. Buz retired from clinical Neurosurgery in 2006. He enjoyed redirecting his energy and interest in Rotary and the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon. A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor, MI on May 19, 2007 at 4pm. A time for fellowship will follow in the church social hall. Memorial contributions can be sent to The Caldwell High School Julian T. Hoff Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Caldwell Foundation for Educational Opportunity, Kathy O'Banon, 2311 Arlington Ave., Caldwell, ID 83605 or to The Boy Scouts of America.

That man was a Saint....I had a spinal tumor and suffered paralysis on my left side.....I had a 80% chance of being paralyzed after surgery... I had zero paralysis after surgery and 22 yrs later, im now 76 and have no complications at all....Dr Hoff was a Great Man and a Wonderful Surgeon..... R.I.P. Dr Hoff.....

Thinking of Dr. Hoff today. Twenty-five years ago he performed the surgery that gave me back the ability to walk. He permanently changed the course of my life for the better. I chose to pay that act forward and spent the next twenty years working in medical research. So sad to think his life was cut short so soon, but his good work continues on even now so many years later. I hope knowing how great his impact was on this world gives comfort to his family, he was a wonderful man.

We will always remember Dr. Hoff and his kindness. 17 years ago Dr. Hoff removed a menningioma from my brain. His gentle nature and professionalism made me feel confident. Over the years, my husband and I looked forward to seeing Dr. Hoff for my check-ups. During one of our last visits, he reflected on how many years it had been since the initial surgery. We will miss him tremendously. My heart goes out to the family--how blessed you all were to have him for a husband/father.

Our thoughts are with you at this time. So sorry we cannot be with you today at the service. The neurosurgery department at the U was kind of our family. We appreciated Dr Hoff's kind gentle graciousness. He followed in the footsteps of some fine human beings with much grace.

Dr. Julian Hoff will be missed by me because he helped through two back surgeries he knew I was scared of. His joking with me relaxed me many times. But I will miss our discussions about the science of the brain that we did after my appointment was through. He made me feel important, like I was his only patient and I will miss his kindly advise. He was the best doctor I ever had.

I am saddened by our loss of a great human being. Buz had a busy and productive life. He was a great teacher. He encouraged his students to excel, and was not threatened by their talent or defensive about their challenges of the status quo. He taught by example, and was a great role model both as a neurosurgeon, as father and husband, and as an American. I was a privileged to have had him as a mentor and advisor. I want to express my deepest sympathy to Diane and his family.

I first met Buz 30 years ago when I was a resident and was assigned to show him around our hospital when he was a candidate for chairman of our program. He eventually chose the job at Michigan but he always remembered me and treated me kindly. I got to know him very well when I worked with him on the annual meeting the year that he was president of the AANS. He was the rare man that was able to blend his professional life and personal life, being a successful surgeon and husband, scientist and father; and neurosurgical statesman and friend. I can not recall him ever saying anything that was unkind or mean spirited. Sitting in front of his fireplace in Ann Arbor he could entertain for hours with stories infused with his warm sense of humor. He was a great role model and friend and I my life has been enriched from having known him.

My late father, Dr. Manard Pont, knew Buz quite well and thought the world of him. Fellow Michiganders, fellow neurosurgeons. My family sends good wishes and condolences to Dr. Hoff's family.

I was fortunate enough to participate in many musical activities with Buz. Piano Lessons, Choir activities and a very fond memory of his performance as Koko in the Mikado are among many that I rememember. Everyone knew he would be very successful in life, His exemplary career proved that. He will be missed by so many.

Buz was my neighbor, school chum, and often companion in work and play. I join others from our youth days in Caldwell who feel sadness at loosing a long-time friend--especially sorrowful when we had hoped to enjoy his company more often in his retirement. Buz lived high standards and achieved success in many ways seldom seen in others. Bravo! It is hard for me to imagine the depth of the loss felt by Diane, but it is comforting to know that she is surrounded by their wonderful family and many friends.

Dr. Hoff remains one of the most profound influences in my life. He is the ultimate role model of the academic neurosurgeon, able to balance inovation, care and compasion for his patients, teaching, and leadership. He was able to do this with integrity and a smile. I will miss him greatly.

It is so nice to know that after High School, Buz continued to excell, prosper and do good service for others much like he did as a youngster in Caldwell, Idaho.

I remember Buz as an excellent student, participator in many activities and service groups and a marvelous sense of humor. He was a special person and each time his name is mentioned, I smile. Such good memories of a fine human being.

The quality of my life changed because of Dr. Hoff's brilliance as a surgeon. I would not be able to walk had Dr. Hoff not recognized my condition and performed a complicated surgery on my spine. I regret that I had not personally thanked him in more recent years. My life would not be the same had it not been for him. My sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues

Buzz was a delightful and refreshing personage. The residents of Glacier Hills very much enjoyed his presentation a couple of years ago, in remembrance of his mother, Helen Kuethe. He was warm and engaging and I regret not having had the opportunity to spend more time in conversation with him. Our Glacier Hills family mourns his loss.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend and high school classmate. Buz was always one of my hero's during high school as he always excelled in whatever he did. We departed ways after high school and only made occasional contacts over the years. We have many grand memories of him that we will always cherish. Julian T. Hoff was a great and admired man. Our sympathy and love go to his family.

I will forever treasure the wise teaching and steady leadership Buz brought to the Michigan Neurosurgery training program. He was the reason I joined the program and he remains one of my greatest role models. I am sorry he did not get a chance to enjoy a longer retirement with his wife and family.
