Kalli Halvorson Obituary

Kalli Rose Halvorson Aug. 15, 1955 - Dec. 20, 2009 Kalli Rose Halvorson, 54, a feminist scholar, theologian, astrologer, writer, musician, and ceremonialist, died of cancer December 20th in Portland, Oregon. Born in that city, she spent most of her adult life in the Bay Area, as well as Rome and India. She attended the Catlin Gabel School, Mills College, the University of California at Berkeley, and received her M.A. from the Graduate Theological Union. Kalli was a lifelong lover of music, seership and feminist spirituality. Her work as a feminist astrological shaman drew on many traditions, including from Old Europe and Asia where planets and stars are perceived as emanations of the Goddess. Kalli's innovative approach to astrology and spirituality exalted the unique qualities, strengths and roles of women, much as Eastern, Western and indigenous religions of antiquity did. A luminary in her fields, she organized the first feminist astrological symposiums, publishing the Herstar Invocations One & Two (1997, 1998). Kalli Rose was a devotee of the Hindu Goddess, Kali. She was given the name Tsering by her Tantric Buddhist teacher, Kali Ma Troma Rigtsal Khandro. Raised in Lake Oswego, Oregon by Carl and Kaye Halvorson, she is survived by her mother; sisters Cheryl Kyeson, Portland, Oregon; Karin Ditzler, Stevenson, Washington; Kristi Halvorson, Sherwood, Oregon; Raundi Halvorson-Quevedo, Paris, France; brother Carl Halvorson, Portland, Oregon; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as her spiritual family of many devoted and loving friends around the world. A celebration of her life and work will take place in Berkeley on April 11.
