Kenneth Archibald Obituary

Kenneth Collett Archibald, M.D. Age 84, of San Francisco, passed away on August 24, 2011 at California Pacific Medical Center where he had spent much of his working life as a physician, specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Ken was born on August 1, 1927, in White Plains, NY, the second child of Dorothy Isabel Coxe Archibald and Walter Douglas Archibald. Ken's father and uncle were proprietors of Archibald & Kendall, spice importers and grinders in New York City. In 1945 Ken joined the army serving as a surgical technician in Korea until 1947. He graduated from St. Lawrence University, in Canton, NY, and Cornell University Medical College, in New York City. In later years he held professorships at Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA and at U.C. San Francisco Medical Center. Ken loved skiing, was on the ski patrol at Alpine Meadows at Lake Tahoe, and continued to ski into his seventies. He was a generous patron of CPMC, with his most visible contribution helping to create the Archibald/Ehrenberg Rehabilitation Terrain Park at the Davies Campus. This first-of-its-kind terrain park features many real world challenges for patients during rehabilitation. He was predeceased by his partner, Robert S. Ehrenberg, his parents, his brothers, Douglas Coxe and (Robert) Bruce Archibald, and his sister-in-law Marcia (Mrs. Douglas) Archibald. He is survived by nieces Shirley Avakian, Nancy (Robert) Wetzel, Dorothy (Mario) Osusky, and Katherine Archibald, nephew David (Sara) Archibald, seven great nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Marian Archibald, good friend Tom Larsen, and his beloved dog Rusty Babes. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 19th at Calvary Presbyterian Church, 2515 Fillmore Street (at Jackson), San Francisco. Interment will be at 3:00 PM at the San Francisco Columbarium, One Loraine Court (off Anza Street), San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the CPMC Foundation, the Horizons Foundation, or the National AIDS Memorial Grove.
