Kenneth Macke Obituary

Kenneth A. Macke Kenneth Anthony Macke, Chairman and CEO of Dayton Hudson Corporation from 1984 to 1994, died Saturday in Napa, CA, from complications associated with Parkinson's disease. He was 69. He is survived by his wife of over 42 years, Kathleen, of Napa, CA. In addition, he is survived by his children, Michael (Sarah) of Napa, Jeffrey (Anne) of Bedford, NY, and Melissa (Dan) Raz of San Francisco; and his grandchildren, Haley and Hannah Macke, Helena and John Kenneth Macke, and Leo Raz. He is also survived by his sister, Judy DeGraeve of Green Bay and his brother, Jim, of Carroll, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Carol Macke. After graduation from Drake University, he joined Dayton's in 1961 as a merchandise trainee and began a 33-year career in retailing, rising through the ranks to head merchant positions at Dayton's and Target. In 1976, he was named president and CEO of Target, and in 1977 was named chairman and CEO of Target. During that time, Target grew from 49 stores in nine states to 137 stores in 16 states and became the corporation's top profit-maker. In 1981, he was elected president of Dayton Hudson Corporation and in 1983 became the corporation's CEO. From his first job as a 15-year-old shoe salesman in Carroll, IA, he always loved every minute of his life in retail. During the decade he was chairman and CEO of Dayton Hudson, the company grew from 350 stores to 909 stores in 33 states and revenues more than doubled to over $19 billion. He was proudest of the company's strategy to concentrate on its three largest companies; Target's growth and move into California, the Northwest and the Southeast; the acquisition of Marshall Field's; the successful defeat of an attempted takeover of Dayton Hudson; and the people he worked with and developed. During that time the company was named "America's Best Managed Company." His commitment to provide opportunities for women and minorities brought national recognition to Dayton Hudson: "100 Best Companies to Work for in America," "100 Companies Providing the Most Opportunities for Hispanics," "50 Best Companies for Hispanic Women." He was named by many publications and groups as one of America's best managers. He served as a trustee of Drake University, and was a director of the Walker Art Center and the Urban Coalition of Minneapolis. In 1989, he chaired the United Way annual campaign, breaking all records for annual fund drives. In 1993, he chaired the board of the Greater Minneapolis United Way. He served as a director of General Mills, Carlson Companies, Unisys, First Bank, The Pillsbury Company, McGlynn Bakeries and Duckwall. After his retirement, he and Kathy moved to the Napa Valley and continued to mentor retail entrepreneurs. The family requests no flowers. Condolences to the Macke family:
Ken and I were contemporaries in the early 60's at Daytons . . . during its heyday. He was a good man and a straight-shooter. Reading of his passing set me to remembering his days behind the counter as the hankie buyer and how quickly he rose from there. May God hold him in the palm of His hand.

Although I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Macke, his son, Jeff, has many of the same traits of his father who he talked about often and with admiration. I have enjoyed watching Jeff on "Fast Money" and know that his father's wisdom did not go unheard.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Macke family.

Mr. Macke helped coach our football team and I was friends with Mike. Some real fun memories are sleeping over at the Macke's. Mr. Macke was just a nice guy, very down to earth. I am praying for you all.. God Bless

To the Macke Family,
My deepest sympathies for your loss. I worked at Daytons at the same time as Ken -I was the Junior Sportwear Buyer when he was rising thru the ranks. I also remember him as the "Hankie Buyer" He always had a smile and a friendly hello whenever I saw him through the years that followed. He definitely had "STAR QUALITY"

My sincere condolences to the Macke family.

I was a Daytonian way back when and I remember how impressed I was with Mr. Macke. After you were finished listening to one of his talks, you felt so excited and privileged to work in the retail industry.

May G-d hold you close as you go through this difficult time.

B'Shalom,

Kathy, my sympathy to you and the entire Macke family. Ken was my 1st “big boss” when I was a trainee for Dayton’s in the Downstairs Store back in 1969. He always knew the answer to every question he ever asked you. I moved to Target in 1972 and shortly after that Ken moved to Target also. Sometime after he was named President of Target I was in an elevator all alone and Ken stepped in. The doors closed and he looked over at me and said, Walter, you’ve come along way since the Downstairs Store at Dayton’s. I looked at him and said “Ken, so have you”. The door to my floor opened and I got off. It was the only time I ever got the last word in with Ken. He was a great teacher and leader of a great company.

I am very sorry to learn that Ken Macke died June 28. I worked at the Dayton's downtown Minneapolis store in the late 1960s as a janitor while attending the University of Minnesota. I quickly noticed an enthusiastic merchandiser who seemed genuinely interested in every aspect of the store's operation; the guy just loved retail. The merchandiser was Ken Macke, of course, and I wasn't surprised when he became Dayton Hudson CEO in 1984. My sympathy to Kathy and the Macke family.

Dear Macke family,

My parents were so proud of "Kenny."
My father always told football stories and my mother was the benefactor of Ken's retail experience when she decided to open shop at age 55 in our hometown of Carroll, IA. I remember Ken coming into our store and saying, 'you gotta get stuff up on display!" He was so generous to our family and left a memorable impression on me. We are thinking of you all.

My sympathy to the Macke family. I was one of 3 gals who lived across a narrow hallway in an apartment building in St. Louis Park from Ken, Tom, and Dave in 1963 when they first came to the Twin Cities fresh out of Drake and were starting to make their marks in the business world. We were all great buddies and enjoyed hearing about their early career lives. Ken would tell us how he handled business situations and could tell that he had a real spark of determination and know-how. I lost track of him after we all moved from that apartment but was able to follow his career from the newspapers and to "think I knew him way back then."

Dear Kathy and family: I was so very sorry to read of Mr. Macke's death. My mom, Marie Fetty, was his secretary at Dayton's during his Rochester years. He was always one of her very favorite bosses. He could do no wrong! She would often say how kind he was to her and all the employees and what a strong work ethic he had. She was a Nebraska girl and also liked the fact that he was originally from neighboring Iowa. I remember him when I would bring the grandchildren down to visit Grandma and we would make a trip to "the store" to say hi to folks. Please know that I hold him and all of you in my heart and prayers. Reggie (Jeanie Fetty) Buresh
