Kirby Walker Obituary

Kirby Walker

November 2, 1956 – August 4, 2019

Documentary filmmaker and activist Kirby Walker passed away on Sunday, August 4th, after a protracted and difficult struggle with melanoma. She lived an enviable life with extraordinary joy, undiminished gratitude, and a contagious positive spirit until the very end.

Kirby was born in 1956 to Brooks and Peggy Walker of San Francisco and was the oldest of three children. She graduated from University of Colorado and received her master's in Communications from Stanford. Upon graduating, Kirby co-founded Omega Productions, a video production company. She married her college sweetheart, Paul Danielsen, in 1982 and they were married for 37 years.

Kirby always seemed to be able to focus on what is truly important in life and set a wonderful example for all those who knew her. Her family always came first. Her husband Paul and sons Myles and Clay were the center of her universe and the source of tremendous pride and pleasure. Whether it was an adventure to Japan, a fishing trip to the Rising River, or simply a family dinner prepared at home, many of Kirby's favorite times were spent with them.

Out in the world, Kirby shone brightly. Everyone wanted to be her friend. It wasn't just her glorious mane of red hair that drew the attention. Kirby simply loved people, and it was obvious to anyone who met her. Her deep curiosity about others' lives and the world in general compelled people to want to be in her presence, and, because she was such a trustworthy listener, to divulge their deepest secrets and truest feelings. Kirby had close friends of all ages. She was widely known for her spontaneous laughter, kindness, and joie de vivre that she shared with everyone from best friends to hospital nurses.

Kirby was happiest in nature and loved hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, and camping, taking great delight in the mountains—especially at Tahoe where she had spent summers and winters as a child and later enjoyed with her own children. Kirby's curiosity drove her to read at least two newspapers every single day and to delve further to find meaning in current events. She loved art, long conversations with friends, the poetry of Mary Oliver, the company of dogs, and collecting heart-shaped rocks. Kirby expressed her gratitude for life often and exuberantly, a practice which extended through her last days.

Kirby's most recent documentary film, Toxic Hot Seat, was distributed by HBO. Most significantly, however, the film was instrumental in a change of California law to protect consumers from carcinogens used by furniture makers in flame-retardant fabrics. In appreciation, San Francisco Firefighters honored her with "The White Helmet" award, the highest level of professional achievement a firefighter can obtain in a career, and the civilian award to those who have made a profound difference to the health and welfare of firefighters in their battle against cancer.

Given her passionate love of the outdoors and nature, it is no surprise that Kirby served on the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council where she is now an Honorary Board Member in addition serving on the boards of Marin Country Day School, Summer Search and the Redford Center.

Besides her husband Paul and sons Myles and Clay, Kirby's sister Leslie Walker, brother Brooks Walker, III, and father and step-mother, Brooks Walker Jr. and Danielle Walker will miss her terribly. As will the many, many others who loved her so dearly.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to NRDC or the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy where Kirby hiked, ran and walked daily for most of her life.

My heart goes out to Kirby's family. I only now learned of her passing and was shocked and deeply saddened. We spent hours together in the editing room at Stanford, me working on a thesis, she working on her wedding video. Steel drums and all:) We talked about the future and dreams and life. What an extraordinary person she was. My heart is with you, her family.

I just heard that Kirby passed away, and I'm so sorry. Although we have been out of touch since I left NRDC in 2012, I still have vivid memories of seeing her at all the organization's events. Her brilliant smile and warm, caring greetings would always lift my spirits. I am so sorry that her smile is no longer warming the lives of the people around her. Condolences to her family and friends. This weekend, I will hike in the hills in Marin and look for a heart-shaped rock in her memory.

One summer I visited an old dear friend on top of the mountain in Fairfax, Marin County. There at the house was Kirby, who I had known for almost 50 years. I was giving rides on those windy twisty roads to everybody on my Harley, and Kirby was the last to go. She hopped on the back and off we went. I knew she was an avid skier so I went fast and carved the turns steeply (but safely of course). At the top the view of the Marin hills was spectacular and I paused only a second before racing back down the twisties. When we got back down a half hour later I turned around and asked her, "What did you think about that view?!" She smiled and said, "I didn't see the view. My eyes were closed." I responded, "What? Were you afraid?!" She replied, "No way...I just wanted to FEEL the ride." That was SO classic Kirby! We both had a good laugh and hopped off the bike.

I am honored to have known Kirby, our immediate comfort as would-be friends took place within the medical community in the past 2 years. Both Kirby and her husband, Paul touched staff hearts with their smiles, connection and very clear love for each other. You always brightened the day in the MRI suite with your smile, bravado, laughter and sincerity.

And, Kirby, I too, have a collection of heart rocks!

I did not know she collected heart rocks too! Lovely Obit full of accomplishments and loves....so sad to hear of her passing:-( and so hard to write an obit that can capture a life, but this one does-kudos!
A life fully lived- one hundred years ago, most did not make it to age 45.....1919, seems so long ago. She was a maverick of good causes- blessings for her family and may her work continue.

It is with great sadness that I offer my condolences to Kirkby's family on her passing. Although our connection was brief through our children at Marin a country Day School, I too remember her as a woman of magical substance and a shining positivity which always announced her presence in any social circumstance. She was a generous mother and friend and clearly a beloved member of a vast community. She will be greatly missed.

I had the privilege of working with and learning from Kirby while she served on the Board of Directors at Summer Search. I was the ED at the time and she was always there to provide thoughtful wisdom, guidance and unconditional support for our program and our students and team. I will always remember the opportunity our community had to honor her contributions to Summer Search in 2016 at our annual gala. A beautiful night spent celebrating our students, alumni and volunteer leaders including Kirby. You are loved and you will be very missed, Kirby! My sincere condolences to her close friends and family.

I remember Kirby's effervescence, her kindness, her acceptance of others. She was a lovely light in a world than often seems too dark to bear.

I met Kirby during the production of Toxic Hot Seat. I was impressed with her knowledge, warmth, and humor, but especially with her passion about the subjects she worked on. It was fun hosting her in my lab, where they filmed for several hours. It was exciting and interesting to see how she and Jamie put the film together from the first rough cuts to the final version. Everyone involved was proud of her work, which helped make and continue to make important changes on how toxic chemicals are used and regulated. I will miss her.

While I did not know Kirby, I know her father, Brooks Walker, Jr., who was in my fraternity Delta Kappa Epsilon at U.C. Berkeley, although he graduated in 1950 one year before I entered. My heart goes out to Brooks and the family for the loss.God Bless You, Rick Bradley

Kirby's smile and sense of the absurd cracked me up and I can't remember a time spent with her that didn't include laughing. She and Paul are very dear to our NRDC family. We are here for you.

I got to know Kirby when she would come over to my fathers gathering on the deck for dinners and Vodka Tonics. Being one of my fathers( Professor Emeritus Ron Alexander) former students in his film making class at stanford I think over the years she became one of his favorites student. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her especially by me as I knew alot of my fathers students going back as early as a teenager.

Kirby brought such energy and joy to the hikes and ski runs that I was lucky enough to share with her. She always shared her photographs as gifts. I will always cherish the photo book that she created for me. I will remember when I am enjoying the Golden Gate National Recreation Areas or Sugar Bowl. xoxo -Stephanie Mellin
