Kwei Hsen Howells passed away, surrounded by family members, on September 13, 2022 at UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco, CA. She was born on the island of Taiwan in 1949 at the end of the Chinese Civil War between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists and Mao Zedong's Communists into a chaotic environment stemming from the mass exodus of people from the Chinese mainland into Taiwan. She grew up in a small village north of Taipei, Taiwan until she immigrated to the United States in 1960. She attended schools in Fayetteville NC graduating from 71st High School in 1968.
She met her husband and life's partner, James, at Fort Bragg, NC where he was stationed as a 2d Lieutenant and they were married in the Post Chapel September 7, 1968 until separated by her passing. Their honeymoon was interrupted with James's deployment to the Republic of Vietnam, where he served as an artillery officer with the 1st Air Cavalry Division from 1968 to 1969. Upon James's return to the United States in 1969, they settled in San Francisco, CA where their first child was born in 1971. Because of James's occupation, they travelled and lived in many places to include, Japan, New York, where their second child, Christopher, was born in 1976; Korea,Taiwan, and Los Angeles CA, where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1985, finally returning to San Francisco CA in 1993; where she lived the rest of her life. During this time, she worked at many jobs in the Federal Government, including secretary, administrative assistant, paralegal, and procurement analyst, finally retiring June 30, 2013. In her spare time, she loved to garden, paint, travel and watch Mandarin soap operas on the Chinese Sky Link and New Taiwan Dynasty television stations.
She's predeceased by her parents, John and Mai Moulden. She is survived by her husband, James, sons James Jr. (Paula), Christopher, grand children, Jacqueline, James III, Jennifer, brothers Michael (Patty) and Eddy Moulden, and many cousins in Taiwan.
She led a rich, productive, and fruitful life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022 from 6 PM to 8 PM at McAvoy O'Hara Co, Evergreen Mortuary, 4545 Geary Blvd at 10 Ave, S. F., CA . The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Sept 21, 2022, 11 AM, at St Ignatius Church, Parker Ave at Fulton St, S.F. CA, followed by a Committal Service at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma CA.
