Laura Hosking Obituary

Laura Kathleen (Sanchez-Corea) Hosking passed away peacefully at home in San Mateo on January 12, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was a faithful and cherished daughter, a loving sister, a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother, and an unwavering lover of family. Laura met the love of her life, Douglas Gordon Hosking, her husband of 40 years, in 1976 in her first week of attending the University of Southern California. They married on August 13, 1983, in San Francisco. Soon after, they moved to Boston as Doug finished his MBA at Harvard. There they began to build a life which would include family, jobs on both coasts, and adventures throughout the world. They then moved to San Francisco and started their family, blessed by the adoptions of their three children, Douglas, Katie, and Andrew.

Laura was born on September 1,1958 to Antonio and Lucille Sanchez-Corea in San Francisco.

At seventeen, she won her first battle with cancer. It was then that she first visited Lourdes, France as a malade with the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. The faith and joy she discovered there was the source and summit of her life, which she carried with her in every moment and in every interaction.

Laura earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California and enjoyed a professional career in supply chain and financial management, finding success in a variety of industries. Her career took her from Atari to Levi Strauss to Industrial Indemnity to ARS & Associates, and everywhere she went she brought professional talent and a spirit of joy and collaboration.

Laura was an avid golfer, with a swing that was regularly rated as beautiful (and effective!) by fellow Olympians and the many friends and family who had the good fortune to play with her at her home course or at the many top courses she had the ambition to tackle. She was a great sportswoman and a great fan. Whether cheering on her own family of athletes or one of the myriad SF teams, her piercing whistle was deployed in celebration and admonishment; especially recognized by Douglas, Katie and Andrew.

Laura loved the outdoors and had an enormous appetite for adventure. Camping trips with the Hosking clan, hiking, and kayaking – particularly while Doug was doing the paddling – were some of her happiest memories.

Laura’s passion was most evident in her devotion to her family, her community, her faith, and her love of adventure. She was a dedicated volunteer, a commitment reflected in a wide range of roles including Parent Group President in the Hillsborough School District and Auction Chair at Sacred Heart Prep in Atherton. Additionally, she found great pleasure and camaraderie with her family and friends as dame in the Order of Malta. She worked especially with St. Anne’s Home, where she led annual parties for the residents at Christmas and brought Lourdes to St. Anne’s residents and many other members of the Bay Area community in need. She worked tirelessly in service of others, and was richly rewarded with love, respect, and admiration from all those with whom she worked and those she served.

Prior to USC, Laura attended Convent of the Sacred Heart, Saint Stephen’s, and Mercy High School.

Laura was predeceased by her father, Antonio, and her aunt Rosalyn (Schummers). She is survived by her mother Lucille (Compagno) Aunt Marilyn (Knight) and Uncle Marc (S-C); husband Doug; children Douglas (Sophie), Katie (Alex) and Andrew (Adam); grandchildren Charlie and Teddy Hosking; sister Lisa Simpson (Justin) and brother Antonio III (Karen); her beloved Hosking in-laws, Kathy and Terry Agnew, Mike and Trish Hosking, Tim Hosking and Audrey Sokoloff and Christi Hosking and scores of loving cousins, nieces and nephews, and extended family.

The funeral will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church on January 19 at 10:00am. A rosary will precede the funeral Mass at 9:30am.
