Lawrence Barrows Carr
08/28/1931 - 04/04/2024
Lawrence Barrows Carr, 92, passed away on April 4, in his home, surrounded by his family.
Son of Louise Barrows and Jesse Carr, Larry was born August 28, 1931, in San Francisco. He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School and received his BA from Stanford University. After attending medical school at George Washington University in D.C., he did his internship and residency at UCSF, where he served as Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Carr had a long and successful career at Saint Frances Memorial Hospital in San Francisco, where he worked for decades as the Director, Clinical Laboratory and Nuclear Medicine. He was board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Nuclear Medicine and Dermapathology.
In 1958, Larry married Marilyn Berry, and they had five children raising them in Ross. The family had many adventures together - skiing the Sierras, vacationing in the Sequoia National Forest and on the Sacramento Delta, and sailing the California Coast, the Channel Islands, British Columbia, and the San Juan Islands.
Larry had a voracious curiosity and was a lifelong learner, interested in everything from world history to weather science and beyond. He was a 'doer' with an insatiable love for life. An avid skier, sailor, hunter, and athlete, Larry was a member of the Olympic Club and the Saint Francis Yacht Club. Sailing was a particular passion, passed down from his father and grandfather. He and his crew won the St. Francis Big Boat Series ('77), the Perpetual Trophy and set the record, which he kept for many years on the Light Ship Race ('78), to name a few. He also raced the Trans Pac on Lighting ('77) and again on Bandit ('87).
After retiring from medicine, Larry began his second career as a rancher in the Central Valley. He and Marilyn spent nearly every weekend developing the ranch and planting and overseeing acres of almond orchards. The couple also enjoyed traveling the world - Europe, South Pole, North Pole, Australia, and South East Asia.
Larry was predeceased by his sisters, Karen Doherty and Jennifer Carr. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Marilyn Carr; his brother, Pete Carr; children, Eliza Lape (Ben), Danny Carr (Connie Rae), Amy Carr, Tony Carr (Kimberly), Sarah Carr (Romeo); grandchildren, Chase, Clayton, Harrison, Audrey, Eve, Brigitte, Julian, Gunther and Athena; and his first daughter, Lorrie Klevos (Larry). He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews; and the loving support from his extended family, Florinda and Doro Flores and children, Brian (Heather) and Billy, and wonderful caregivers, Luke and Ruci Vakaliwaliwa.
