Lawrence Merrion (88) passed away peacefully after a prolonged fight with prostate cancer on Saturday, June 17, 2023, in Pleasant Hill, CA. He enjoyed a full life with a long career as an architect, passion for graphic arts, IndyCar racing, travel, learning, and time with family.
Born on May 12, 1935, Lawrence was a native of Livonia, MI. He was the oldest of four boys followed by David, Richard, and Chris, born to Francis and Ruby Folker-Merrion. After graduating from Bentley High School in Livonia, he pursued a BA degree at Columbia University on a NROTC scholarship. Lawrence then served in the Navy for three years, touring both the Atlantic/Baltic and Pacific regions. In 1960, he married Joanne Brennan in Sacramento, CA. Later, Lawrence completed a second degree in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. He and Joanne settled in North Berkeley, where they raised their four children Denise, Mark, John, and Paul. They were active parishioners at St. Mary Magdalen, and very involved in supporting their children's activities, until their divorce in the late 90's. Lawrence married Judy O'Healy in 1999, and lived in Concord, CA. Lawrence and Judy enjoyed spending time with family and friends, participating in community events, and traveling. Sadly, Judy passed away in 2017.
Lawrence dedicated an impressive 57 years to his career in architecture, and remained an engaged member of industry organizations, including CSI and AIA. He also offered his expertise as a consultant and expert witness.
Lawrence is survived by Joanne, Denise, Mark (Lynn), John (Christine), Paul (Maria) and grandchildren Sarah, Connor, Shannon, Declan, Kennedy, Lucas, and Mila. He is also survived by his three brothers Dave (Jean), Richard (Sandra), and Chris (Linda) as well as extended family from Judy's side.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Instead, a celebration of Lawrence's life is planned for early August, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory.
