Leo McCarthy Obituary

Leo Gerald McCarthy On Sunday, January 30, 2011, Leo passed away after a four year battle with cancer. A lifelong San Franciscan, Leo was born on March 24, 1941 and spent his life growing up, working, getting married and raising a family in the city he loved. He attended Star of the Sea Grammar School, Riordan High School and the University of San Francisco. On June 12th, 1965 he married the love of his life, Lynda Elizabeth Clark. Leo and Lynda spent the next 44+ years together-learning exactly how much love and commitment it takes to raise five boys. And it's that love and commitment that all of us who knew Leo will always cherish. Leo leaves behind a family who will never forget how much he meant to all of us: His wonderful wife, Lynda; his beloved sons Richard, Matthew, James, Thomas and Robert; his beautiful daughters-in-law Estela, Anna, Doris and Danielle; and the grandchildren that were his joy: Robert, Theresa, Aidan, Meara, Emily, Sophia and Jacqueline. Leo is survived by his siblings Adele, Catherine, Irene, Thomas and Richard and now reunited with his dear departed brother Jack. SERVICES: Visitation from 5-7pm, and a brief Vigil at 7pm, Thursday, February 3rd-McAvoy O'Hara, 4545 Geary Boulevard, SF, CA (415) 668-0077. Funeral Mass at 10am, Friday, February 4th-Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 4420 Geary Boulevard, SF, CA (415) 751-0450. Internment immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma, CA 94014. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leo's memory can be made to Star of the Sea School, 360 - 9th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94118.

I went to USF with Leo and remember him sitting around a table in the Green and Gold Room talking politics. He was a good guy and his friendship is one of the things that makes my days at USF precious. My condolences to his family. He will always be remembered in my prayers.

To the McCarthy Family,

Your dad, and wonderful husband Lynda, was the best. We loved living across the street from you and Leo always loved to chat and catch up on the latest. I will always miss seeing him get in that little white rodster of his and zip down the street.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love to you all,

The Murphys

Dear Lynda and Family. Thank you very much for letting me get to know you. Though I've spent more time with you Lynda, I will never forget how kind Leo was to me when I was in the hospital a few years ago. Leo had a kind of charm that was never phony or too sweet. I felt that he genuinely cared for me and I know how much he loved you and the kids. Years ago, after my first wife died, I found a small mirror in her purse. On the back of the mirror is a picture of several balloons and the words, "Celebrate being alive". I have always thought of these words as Denise's last message to me. I have no doubt that Leo too would want you all to celebrate being alive. You are all in my prayers, as is Leo. God bless you,
Terry H
