Leonard Hayflick PhD, pioneering microbiologist, passed away on August 1, 2024, at his home in The Sea Ranch, California. He is best known for the seminal discovery of "cell senescence" when he found that normal human cultured cells are mortal, popularly called "The Hayflick Limit." His significant contributions also extended to the fields of vaccine development, cell culture technology, microscopy, and intellectual property rights. Leonard Hayflick was born on May 20, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was the son of Nathan Hayflick and Edna (Silver) Hayflick (pre-deceased). He held positions at Stanford University Medical School, Oakland Children's Hospital Medical Center, Department of Veterans Affairs and UCSF. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth (Heckler) Hayflick. He is survived by his sister, Elaine Rosomoff; and his children, Joel (Louise Band), Deborah Curle, Susan (Penny Hogarth), Rachel Hastings (Jeff), Annie (Rui Neves); and eight grandchildren. Family services will be private. Charitable donation suggestions in memoriam to Jewish National Fund, Save the Redwoods and Planned Parenthood.
