Coming full circle, Linda Ann Reuther passed away at Zen Hospice of San Francisco on Sept. 20, 2013, at the age of 71. Linda was surrounded by sunflowers and love ~ and she had a smile on her face.
She was born Aug. 24, 1942, the first child of Walter P. and May Wolf Reuther of Detroit. Walter Reuther was an ardent and highly respected labor leader, the founder of the UAW.
After graduating from U of M(ichigan) in 1965, Linda came to San Francisco to teach in Head Start. In 1972, she and her lifelong friend, Julie Silber followed a passion for antique quilts and opened a store ("Mary Strickler's Quilt") in Marin.
Linda had many interests; music was a major one. She sang in choirs, and performed with women's percussion groups. She was passionate about many socially progressive causes ~ deeply involved with nature and environmental causes.
In 1997, Linda moved to Albion, CA to create a retreat center, which she named "Heart and Hands."
Between 1997 and 2009, hundreds of people came to Hearts and Hands to be restored through writing, yoga, meditation, movement, and other workshops. They felt welcomed and sheltered by Linda's inimitable style and the bountiful beauty and sense of abundance she had created in what has been described by many as "the quintessential home."
Linda is survived by her sister, Elisabeth Reuther Dickmeyer; brother-in-law, Bruce Dickmeyer; a niece and two nephews; her aunt, Chris Reuther Richey; many cousins; her life-long pal, Julie Silber; and her life companion, Michele Tellier of Albion.
Donations can be made to Hospice of the No. Mendocino Coast or a charity of your choice.
A potluck in Linda's honor will be held in Albion, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26. Call 510-409-0826 for details.

To all those close to Linda, With deep sympathy for her early passing. I lived in Linda's little cottage/reconverted garage in san anselmo in 1987. It was a blessing to share the land with her there on the top of the hill, with the beautiful gardens and the trails leading in all directions. Linda's hospitality and generosity were expansive. I was particularly inspired by her full wardrobe in black and grey - she could really make it work. I was glad she could get out to the country and create a retreat - her welcoming arms embraced us all. I am so glad to have known her.

I just woke up (in a hotel in NJ) from a wonderful dream filled with handiwork and baskets & Linda Reuther energy. I went online to see if there was yet anything posted of Linda's passing and learned that yesterday was the gathering at Hearts & Hands.
I am sorry that I missed the opportunity to be with people who knew and loved Linda (i am now living in New England...). Linda's spirit and loving force was/is incredibly strong--- her sense of & appreciation for beauty endures. Indeed, she will be missed. I so appreciated her visit in my dream! What a wonderful gift.
My condolences to Linda's partner, her family, and her Mendocino/Albion community, especially to my cousin Ceril & to Julie Silber.
Namaste.

One of those people I was always happy to see and I will miss her. We first met in the 70's in Inverness and we both ended up in Mendocino, it was a joy to find her here.
