Lucille Jewett Obituary

Lucille Jewett
January 1, 1929 - December 22, 2023
Lucille McIntyre Jewett, active San Francisco community leader and philanthropist, died on December 22nd after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was a few days shy of her 95th birthday. A Christmas miracle occurred when she met her great-granddaughter in October and inexplicably much of her cognition came back to express her profound joy. The condition continued to the end allowing family and friends to enjoy the Lucy we all loved.
Lucy was born on January 1, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., as the only child of Charles Edwin "Eddie" McIntyre and Elizabeth Newbery McIntyre. She later moved to Tacoma, Wash., with her family, and attended Stadium High School and then went on to the University of Puget Sound. After college, she reconnected with childhood friend George Frederick "Fritz" Jewett Jr, who proposed after a six-week courtship, and they were married in Tacoma in 1953. They moved to Lewiston, Idaho where Fritz worked with the Potlatch Forest Inc., and Lucy helped establish a new chapter of the YWCA. Their daughter, Betsy was born in 1954, and son, George in 1956. The family loved to spend time on the water, with many summers and vacations spent either on the beaches of Hawaii or sailing in Woods Hole, Mass.
In 1965, the Jewett's moved to the Bay Area, living in Ross, Calif., and then moving into their San Francisco home in 1986. On moving to California, Lucy fell in love with the San Francisco Ballet, joining the board in 1969 and remaining on it for the rest of her life. During the 1970s, Lucy and Fritz helped keep the ballet afloat during a major financial crisis when the dancers were rehearsing out of an auto body shop. The Jewett's took turns with three other families to pay the dancers' wages. Lucy championed the "Save our Ballet" campaign, which ultimately succeeded in giving the ballet its own building for rehearsal and school. Lucy loved taking friends and family to the ballet, and always made sure to go backstage after a performance to congratulate the dancers.
Lucy served on many other non-profit boards over the years, including that of the University of Puget Sound, Henry Luce Scholars, and the ARCS Foundation. Lucy loved sailing, and along with her husband Fritz was heavily involved with the America's Cup over several decades, successfully winning the Cup in 1980 and 1987. For her contributions to the sport, Lucy was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 2013, only the second woman to ever be granted the honor.
Nobody loved to throw a party like Lucy. Whether it was a festive soiree in support of the many organizations she supported, a big anniversary, or her favorite of all the annual Christmas party. Lucy was a hostess with few peers. From over the top and creative decor to serving delectable food all who knew treasured their place on the guest list. Memorable events included hosting Prince Philip in support of World Wildlife Fund as well as events for political leadership from both parties.
Lucy was preceded in death by Fritz (2008), her beloved husband of 55 years. She is survived by her daughter, Betsy Jewett (Rick Gill); son, George Jewett; grandchildren, Sam Jewett (Lacey Allen), Fritz Jewett (Sarah Jewett), Sarah Coombs, David Coombs, Shannon Helbling (Ryan), and Erin Houle (Hunter); and a great-granddaughter, Bennie Louise Jewett-Allen.
The family suggests donations to the San Francisco Ballet, Chris Hellman Center for Dance, 455 Franklin Street, San Francisco, Calif. 94102 or to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., Att: Online Services, P.O. Box 97166, Washington, DC 20090-7166.
Lucy will be celebrated at a private family service.

Dear Betsy and George:
I just published a book on Amazon called, "Famous In California" about my 60 years as an entertainer. There is a full chapter in Part 3 about your mom and dad, the America's Cup in the 1980s: Newport, Intrepid, Freedom, and including the song I composed for them entitled, "Freedom on our Side."

I still miss them and value the wonderful memories I have of performing for them--and both of you. Lucy was so supportive of me and Fritz also sponsored me into the St. Francis Yacht Club as an Associate Member.

I hope all is well with both of you.

With deep affection,
Marianne Kent

Dear Betsy & George -
You don´t know me, but I grew up in Lewiston where my parents knew your parents & were close friends of many PFI leaders. I remember well junior high dances & activities at the new YWCA your folks built. The community has changed significantly since those days & for over 50 years, my residence has been on either the east coast or here in Sacramento. But every time I return to the Lewis-Clark Valley for a reunion, I am reminded of the generous contributions your parents made to our community. Clearly, they made an indelible difference wherever they lived. Their kindness, generosity & influence will long be remembered.

Dear George and Betsy.
I´m sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs Jewett. I´ll always remember her kindness and great stories that she shared with me. I did her hair for almost 30 years at Mr Lee and later at the Fairmont Hotel.
She was always such an inspiration and a great person. RIP

Betsy and George,
Your mom was such a beautiful force exuding graciousness and elegance. I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember the day I met your mom at the SF Free Clinic lunch. I had just arrived in San francisco. She welcomed me, connected me with her friends and her organizations. Because of her, for 23 years I've been an OB?GYN volunteer at the SF Free Clinic and on the SF Ballet Board.
Your mom made those introductions, friended me and welcomed me to the community. She was truly an amazing woman that I am so privileged to have known.
I have the fondest memories of your mom and Fritz dancing at Tatiana's first birthday party, at the Ballet board meetings, performances and events both locally and abroad.
She will be missed but her memory lives.
My heart goes out to you and your family in this time of sadness.

Dearest Betsy and George:

I have so many wonderful memories of your mom and dad. Here is one of my favorites with Lucy:

I composed a song called, "Freedom on our Side" for their America's Cup party in Newport in 1980. Just before dinner was served at their party for about 200+ guests, Lucy said, "Ok, Marianne. Let's have the Blockbuster!" I started singing it and immediately saw Tom Blackaller race past the band toward the house. Tom was also a member of St. Francis Yacht Club and well-known as lively, fun, competitive, and often very mischievous. He was also the skipper of Defender-- the main challenger to Dennis Conner and Freedom. He turned off the power half-way through my song. Everyone screamed. Lucy came toward me and yelled, "Marianne Keep singing!" So I did, accompanied only by trumpet and drums, as they did not need amplification.

Soon, the power was back on, Tom had disappeared and we performed "Freedom On Our Side" three more times that evening.

Fritz sponsored my Associate Membership into St. Francis Yacht Club.

My heartfelt condolences to you and your family and I am so grateful that I knew your parents.

Dear Betsy and George
Nobody liked to give a party more than your Mother.
We first met when you were living in Ross.
She became a good friend.
Family was always so important to her.she always showed an interest in mine.
She helped our daughter secure a place at UPS in Tacoma.
She was always so appreciative of all the flowers and decorations for the parties and events that I provided.
Lucy loved beautiful flowers.
Her love for San Francisco was evident in every way especially her passion for the Ballet.
One Christmas she gave me tickets to the Nutcracker so I could take our daughters.
Always so generous
She arranged a tour of Giverny Monet´s beautiful garden in Normandy. She knew it would be special for me and my family
A place she loved and supported.
So many wonderful memories. Thank you Lucy for everything
Fondly
Valerie Arelt
