Martin Labagh Obituary

Martin Labagh
12/03/1952 - 06/18/2024
Martin F. Labagh (aka 'Marty the Great') passed away on June 18, 2024. He was born on December 3, 1952, in San Francisco to P. Steele Labagh and M. Henrietta Labagh. A true San Franciscan, he grew up on 9th Avenue in a house with 8 brothers and sisters: Loretta, Teresa (Deceased), Paul, Leonard (Deceased), Gregory, Barbara, Donna, and Lisa. Their front door was always open, and friends and neighbors were welcome.
Marty went to St. Brendan's Grammar School. His 8th grade basketball team was legendary, and he and his teammates have remained close friends until this day. Growing up, Marty loved playing any sport he could find. He was a born athlete, but basketball was his passion. He continued his love of basketball at St. Ignatius, USF, and the Olympic Club. His love for sports has been passed down to his children and grandchildren, many of whom are competitive athletes.
In 1974, Marty married his high school sweetheart, Donna. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Marty and Donna have four children, Justin (Layla), Jason (Athena), Lauren, and Aimee (Frank), and eight grandchildren, Steele, Soheila, Aidan, Kayla, Weston, Ellia, Everly, and Mackenna. Marty was a loving husband and dedicated father and grandfather. He cherished spending time with his family, especially at their home away from home in Sonoma.
In 1986, Marty purchased Larkins Bros. Tires, a company traced back to 1865. He was a hands-on owner whose employees and customers trusted and relied upon him. His innovative approach continually drove success and inspired those around him. Marty graciously employed most of Justin and Jason's friends with their first jobs.
Marty was selfless, constantly giving back to his community in whichever way he could. Whether it was coaching his children's CYO athletic teams, serving as President of St. Ignatius Men's Club, or President of The Olympic Club, he was always up for lending a helping hand.
Marty lived a life filled with love, laughter, sports, family, and friends. He will forever be remembered for his gentle demeanor, quick wit, contagious smile, and lighthearted sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Friends may visit Monday, June 24th after 4:30pm at St. Stephen Church, 601 Eucalyptus Drive, San Francisco where a vigil will be held at 6:30pm.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, June 25th at 10:30am at St. Stephen Church. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alzheimer's Research preferred.

Donna, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. It is always difficult for me to know what to say about someone you have known for over 40 years. When I think of Marty I think about his smile. I never saw at work or socializing without a great smile. I saw him last year at a family even in Aptos and even then he had his great smile. Whenever I think of Marty I will see him smiling.

I knew Marty mostly, from years ago when he was the anchor of the great St. Brendan's basketball team he led to the 8th-Grade NorCal Championship. Always a friendly guy, with a low-key sense of humor who made people feel comfortable around him and his physical stature. I saw him five years ago at another mutual friend's memorial service, and he was as congenial as ever. I extend my sympathy to Donna and their family at this difficult time---Marty was a great guy who'll live on in the many hearts and memories of those who knew him.
