Matilda (Til) Brunswick Stewart, born March 6, 1929, died peacefully at home in Berkeley on May 26, 2025.
Til was a very accomplished, caring, lively, and intelligent woman. She possessed an understated elegance and a wry sense of humor, balanced by strong political and aesthetic sensibilities.
Born in New York City, Til spent her early childhood in Vienna with her parents, Mark Brunswick, a composer/conductor, and Ruth Mack-Brunswick, a psychiatrist, along with her beloved nanny Hilde Grossman and Hilde's husband Alois Prinnegg (Minga).
They moved to Vienna while Ruth studied psychoanalysis with Sigmund Freud; their families became close, and Til was named after Freud's eldest daughter.
Til attended Reed College and graduated from S.F. State in 1956, where she discovered her interest in therapeutic and practical social work. She received her M.S.W. from U.C. Berkeley in 1958 and went on to practice at Mount Zion Hospital in its heyday during the 1960s and 70s.
In 1968 she married Charles Thomas Stewart, M.D. (Charlie), a child psychiatrist and author. They lived in San Francisco with their co-mingled four cat family until they found their beautiful garden home in the Berkeley Hills.
Til surrounded herself with an eclectic circle of loving friends. In particular, she was warmly involved in the lives of her dear friends Mary and Jean, and their children, respectively, Daniel and Alexis, also Til's goddaughter.
Til lived her final years in her home, with devoted caretakers, Julie, Jun and Ludivina.
Her cat Bella and Julie's dog Macho kept her smiling and her lap warm.
She is survived by her family: beloved nephew and niece Daniel Stewart and Sarah Hawklyn, Sarah's sons Benjamin and Scott, and second cousins Louise, Debby, and Judy Rosenkrantz.
Her celebration of life, for friends and family, is Oct. 6th at 12:00. Graveside, Sunset View Cemetery. 101 Colusa Ave, El Cerrito, CA 94530
