Melvin Flyer Obituary
04/28/1929 - 02/07/2024
Melvin Flyer, age 94, died at home in San Francisco, CA Feb. 7, 2024. Born in Brooklyn, NY on April 28, 1929 to Philip Flyer and Sadie Weiss Flyer. He is survived by brother David Flyer (Edie) of Tucson, AZ; son Kevin Flyer of Rohnert Park, CA; Bruce Flyer (Susan) of Clearwater, FL; grandchildren Aurielle Dirden of Tacoma, WA; Shane and Angelina Flyer of Rohnert Park; partner Vera H. Price of San Francisco; stepchildren Peter Phleger (Courtney) of Petaluma, CA; Michael Phleger (Patty) of San Francisco: and Marianna Phleger of San Mateo, CA.
Mel's career of 30 years as a salesman for Seagrams was perfect for such an outgoing, gregarious, people-loving person. He was an avid conversationalist who could speak on any topic. At his core, he was generous, compassionate, plus ecumenical in thought and deed. Raised a Jew, in mid life he embraced Buddhism, holding both gently, securely in his heart.
Married to Lady Jill Fitz-Clarence in 1953, it was a short marriage lasting until Jill returned to Europe in the mid 1950's. Violet (Pat) Deery, Mel's second wife, came to New York from Ireland then followed Mel to San Francisco where they were married in 1960. The mother of Mel's children Kevin and Bruce, the marriage lasted 16 years. Artist Joan Casserly, his third and fourth wife, was the love of Mel's life. They were married 40+ years until Joan passed.
Mel had many passions throughout his life including being a lover of the Arts. He was a keen supporter of the Symphony, Orchestra, Ballet and art museums. Mel himself was also a prolific artist across many mediums. He was an enthusiastic, life-long learner and enjoyed taking classes at University of San Francisco well into his 80's. He loved hiking, Mt. Tam in particular, and found joy in rainbows. Mel and Joan delighted in traveling the world and taking cruises together throughout their marriage. He relished life and was a joy to be around.
