Michael Drews Obituary

Michael O'Shea Drews Died on Saturday, September 3rd after a year-long battle with liver disease. Born in San Francisco on January 20, 1970 he died at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City, CA. surrounded by his family. He was 41 years old. He is survived by his father John Drews, his son Aidan, 11 years old, and a sister in Ireland, Anna Drews. He is also survived by his mother Patricia Stoll, and his step father, Michael Stoll, both of Redwood City, a sister Katy Stoll and a brother Ryan Stoll. He is predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Ernest and Bonnie Renner of Los Angeles, and his paternal grandparents, Rudy and Mary Drews of Ross and Hillsborough. Michael, a true Aquarius, was a kind, gentle and unselfish person who lived a unique and well-traveled life. Along the way he acquired a wide range of friends in the commercial world and the music world. As a boy growing up Michael excelled in sports. He was an all-star in Little League, and a starter on the soccer team at Menlo Boys School. Michael attended Menlo School, Marin Catholic High, the American International School in Singapore, and graduated from Menlo Atherton High. He attended Foothill College. But Michael was not born to be a scholar. He was a traveler and a musician and music was his first love. He left school to follow the Grateful Dead around the country, and showed an early entrepreneurial spirit by supporting himself selling shirts and food outside the shows. He played keyboards, guitar and was a virtuoso blues harmonica player. He traveled in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, and jammed onstage with groups in every country. In small villages he would entertain crowds with his playing. One memorable evening at Anywheres, the leading music club of its time in Singapore, he brought a packed house to its feet and received several encores when he tore the place up playing with the club band. That was when he was in his early 20's. When he returned to the US he found himself on stage playing with James Cotton at a Northern Calif. blues festival. When his son Aidan came along, music took second place and he started working long and hard hours as a sales manager in the home improvement business. Michael was successful in sales and business primarily because he was honest, a good listener with a talent for relating to everyone. People trusted Michael because he never lied to them, and he had a great capacity for empathy. He enjoyed playing golf with his friends, and father and son; who were amazed at his ability to hit a 7-iron 180 yards! When he was younger he was an avid squash player, and he loved to cook. He also was an accomplished glass blower and made multi-colored pendants created with his own signature style. And lastly, Michael had courage. When he was diagnosed with his disease he knew that there were only two possible endings: a liver transplant or death. He fought to live even as he became sicker, enduring multiple hospitalizations so that he could obtain a transplant and survive for his son. He was 6" 1" and 195 lbs. when he got sick. He weighed 130 when he died. He missed the opportunity for a transplant by a matter of days after a year-long struggle. He leaves a gap in the lives of his family and friends that will never be filled and a memory that will endure always. There will be memorial mass and celebration of Michael's life for family and friends.

Dear family and friends of Michael O'Shea Drews, whom I once called *Michael Outtasight Drews* and we laughed together -

Elizabeth just called me last night and I found out about Mike. My husband Nathan and I were friends with him and also close with Andy Magic Maz - I wanted to include Mike's own voice so we all can hear his own words he wrote about his soul brother, and remember and celebrate how rare and wise and true Mike is - so full of SOUL!!! So there!!! A good and beautiful friend, love, person, and father. A very original human being.

Nathan and I have a fun memory of being in Golden Gate Park with him and Aidan, also seeing Blues in Sausalito Cruising Club and dancing and playing tambourine to Silvia Cicardini Band in the Saloon in North Beach, also jamming and singing with friends, and of course many times with Andy.

I had last seen him (Mike) when he came to my dance performance of Carmina Burana in the Mission, and hung out after our show with Mike and my Mom. We kept in touch over time and years, and he was a very comforting and solid presence with a gentle power, in touch and attuned with all that is so real, seeing the essence or life force in people and in nature. When my cousin died he wrote me, "Remember he was not taken from us, he was chosen to receive peace. So drain your tears and then smile!" When we saw Silvia at the Saloon, she said to me and Mike about Andy, "This isn't where he died, this is where he LIVED!"

I know Mike would want each of us to absoulutely embrace and enjoy every moment of our lives. ! I felt so sad hearing last night that he died, yet in the midst of my tears and lighting a candle for him I also felt laughter coming through because of the sheer joy and strength of his spirit - I felt that he is in a good place, and I trust and hope Aidan knows and feels how much his father was and is still there for him in spirit - he cares for all of us so much - this I know in my heart and we will all carry on love with us in our life paths.

I wear the blown glass pendant he gave me and I made a small altar for him with the special feather he found in nature and my father's harmonica, and lit a candle. I feel he is with us all - I wish we could share more good times and honor with reverence and all the soul I can muster for Mike!

With love, respect, and a shout out to two soul brothers in heaven, may hearing and taking in Mike's own words bring healing and smiles through our tears - I am so glad I met you and got to know you - I miss you so much and I'll be looking out for you watching over us all : ) Lisa Lincoln

I feel like my heart has been ripped out and I just have to keep reminding myself how lucky I was for every minute spent with my soul brother. The impact he has had on my life will be an echo that comforts me for the rest of my life and beyond. This world will never be the same without him and I hope he decides to come back soon after a nice healing respite from all the things he was seeking relief from. History shows us again and again how pure genius combined with raw talent and a mountain of soul can cause an overload of power that human bodies can't withstand. His downfall was that he was more than a man. He was my very best friend and I wish him Godspeed on the wings of angels to that JJ's in the sky, where I'm sure we are all a bit jealous that we won't be there for that one. My heart goes out to all of you who loved Andy and especially his family. Nothing that good ever lasts and we were blessed with an angelic spirit that we will never forget. A couple of my fondest memories involve him trying to make me eat salad and drink juice because he was concerned about our health while he was smoking cigarette butts out of the ashtray, rofl. He was a baseball player for sure and proved it to me many times when we would play whiffle ball in the middle of the ghetto in the middle of the night or while hiking and we would find a tree branch for a bat and use pine cones as balls. He really got into it and so would I. It was like being a kid again when you were with Andy. God I'm going to miss his sense of humor... that guy could make me laugh.

from the bottom of my heart,

Michael O'Shea Drews

Hi Drews Family.

Mike was a very close friend of my brother Andrew Mazzilli.
I knew Mike pretty well and he was a big support to me and my family when my brother passed away in 2007. He reminded me of very funny things that made my brother and I laugh and smile. Mike was just an overall lover of Life. My tears are with you. Maybe Mike can see Andrew now and Jesus is Communing with them. Much Love to You all,

Michael... You've been a largest light for so many of us this lifetime with your generous sweet empathic self... Your energy, ideas, ingenuity--your humor.. the beauty, strength and light you've spread and shared will be with us all always... Just have to believe that. &Hopefully, we've all leaned a generosity of spirit from you that we may not have known without knowing you. Love and strength and sweetest memories of that self of you to your amazing family. Just don't have the words... Thank you, Mike for your unfailing and warm support... even through your illness (that was always, 'no thing'...) have to laugh at myself now for letting you get away with that : } So brave, Michael, so brave. So much love, and sorely missed and ever in our hearts. Always,
