Michael Mahoney Obituary

Michael Mahoney
07/18/1953 - 09/12/2024
Michael Mahoney, 71, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 12, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lynn Mahoney; beloved daughters, Stephanie Blackwood (Paul Roberts), Becky Hill (Matt Hill); and cherished grandchildren, Alyssa and Jimmy Blackwood, Jack and Ashley Hill. He is also survived by his siblings, Geraldine Ryan (Hank), Maureen Vier (John) and Daniel Mahoney (Lorraine); as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Vera and Gerald Mahoney; and his beloved cousin, Marilyn Byrne.
A fourth generation San Franciscan, Mike grew up in the Parkside District and graduated from St. Cecilia's grammar school and St. Ignatius High School. He dedicated his life of service to SFPD for over 30 years. The highlights of his career included his beginnings at Mission Station, his promotion to Hit and Run detail, where he became an expert in accident reconstruction, before finally retiring from the Homicide Unit. He went on to have a successful career with his brother, Dan, in sharing a business dedicated to accident investigations (Traffic Collision Consultant, Inc).
Though Mike was passionate about his career, his greatest joy in life was his family. He devoted his life to being present to his wife and daughters and later, as being the best "Papa." He traveled near and far to attend games, recitals, competitions, and all of life's celebrations, because family was the single most important thing in his life. Annual family trips included favorite spots in Lake Tahoe and Maui, as well as holidays in Scottsdale and Nashville. It did not matter where the trip was, as long as the whole family was together.
He was a passionate golfer, a train aficionado, an avid reader, and an expert joke teller. He was fluent in movie quotes and classic rock, and the best trivia player at the table. He was loved beyond measure and is so dearly missed.
A Memorial Mass will be held on October 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Joan of Arc in San Ramon, Calif. (2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd.). A Celebration of Life will follow at Bay Club Crow Canyon (711 Silver Lake Dr., Danville). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Francisco Bay Area Law Enforcement Emerald Society, or to the Widows and Orphans of SFPD.

As youngters we knew each other for many years at Parkside Park - he was a true "park rat" - let's rephrase that - he was true Parkside "gopher" ' whether coaching or playing with him you always could count on Mike to come through! Will surely miss him.

My heart goes out to the Mahoney Family ~

I worked with Lynn for over 20 yrs so that is how I met Mike! He would come into the office at Royal Insurance a lot and every time he did I always said "the cops are here, everyone hide" and he laughed every single time! I am simply blessed to be able to call him my friend! I love his wife and I love him so much as he LOVED his family like you can not believe!

That man could tear up a dance floor as I witnessed it at office Christmas parties when he danced with me! Makes my heart smile remembering it all....

I talked to him a couple of months ago when we were worried what was going on and he had just come home from the hospital and was SO happy to be home! Lynn was out at the time, we talked and the last words I said to him were "I Love You" and his reply was "I Love You too Taryn".

I will Forever hold that in my heart!
This man was a beautiful soul and the world is a better place because he was in it!

Mahoney Family, I met Mike at Mission Station in 1979..As our careers crossed, He always greeted me with a smile and a hug. Played golf with he and Dan over the years, and had tons of laughs. We have indeed lost a great man, a dedicated cop, and a wonderful friend

To the Mahoney family, I was sad to hear the news of Mike´s passing. Mike was my midnights FTO when I was at Mission, a great teacher, cop and man. Another one gone to soon. Rest in peace you have earned it.

Mike was a good man and a good cop. He was a regular at Parkside park, back when kids hung out and played sports at their local Park. Rest peacefully
