Michael F. McLaughlin passed away in the early morning hours at home on December 22, following a long illness.
Michael was born in San Francisco in January of 1943. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, later attending Saint Ignatius High School. After graduation Michael enlisted in the U.S. Navy and extensively traveled the world as a young Sailor.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Michael returned to San Francisco and entered college. It was ten months after returning home that he met the love of his life, Maureen Savage. After a short courtship they were married in 1965 at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in San Francisco.
In 1966 Michael joined the San Francisco Fire Department, retiring in 2001 after 35 years of service. Michael was a true fireman and formed many lasting and long-term friendships with his fellow firefighters, treasuring their times together, both at the fire house and socially.
In 1972 Michael and Maureen were blessed with the birth of their only child, Patrick, with whom he had a close and loving relationship.
Michael was a gifted artist specializing in heraldry, portraits, cartoons, Chinese New Year drawings, Day-of-the Dead drawings, and award drawings for the Hibernian of the Year presentations. He also customized fire helmets, including a special presentation to Mayor Diane Feinstein as well as to other City dignitaries.
Michael was a member of the Hibernian Newman Club of San Francisco for 40 years, serving as the President for two terms. He was honored as the Hibernian Newman of the Year in 2004.
Michael is survived by his wife, Maureen, his son, Patrick, two grandsons, his sister-in-law Diane DeLeon and her husband George, his brother-in-law Wayne Savage and his wife Sheryon, as well as his extended family of many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Michael was predeceased by his parents Albert and Mary Catherine McLaughlin, his brothers, Albert and Patrick, his sisters Almaire and Cathleen, his niece Margaret, and his nephews Sean and Matthew.
A memorial service is scheduled for January 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Ouimet Bros. Funeral Chapel, 4125 Clayton Rd., Concord, with interment at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 2011 Arnold Industrial Way, Concord, followed by a Celebration of Life for family and friends, location to be announced.
