Michael Tola Obituary

Michael Tola
September 1, 1949 - October 3, 2023
"I hope my last breath and my last dollar coincide" Activist, connoisseur of life's pleasures, stubborn S.O.B., 30-year volunteer at Children's Hospital, decent golfer who never took a mulligan, and inveterate cat lover, Michael was pretty close to fulfilling that hope when he died early Tuesday of cirrhosis at home in the Courtyard in Berkeley where he had lived on and off for 40 years. He was predeceased by his beloved ex-wife Ellen Flora and is survived by his sister Mary Anne Burton of North Carolina, and many, many friends who will get together in a couple of months and pour one out for him. Donations may be made in Michael's name to support Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland (UCSF Foundation, PO Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339)

Michael, known to us as `Supes´, was conscientious and didn´t suffer fools gladly. He also had distinctive penmanship which reinforced his personality. I remember his enthusiasm when sharing a book of drawings by Winsor McCay, and him allowing me just enough time to work out a connection to Maurice Sendak. If there is a celebration of his life, please reach out.
