Minton Newell Memoriam

Minton Newell
MINTON JOSEPH NEWELL
October 24, 1935 - August 5, 2023
Born to Jean Oliver Newell and Joseph Carroll Newell in San Francisco, Minton grew up in the Montclair district of Oakland. He attended Oakland Technical High School, where he lettered in varsity football, playing Center on offense and Linebacker on defense.
Minton earned All-City honors two consecutive seasons, a distinction also achieved by his teammate, John Brodie. From then on, he was affectionally known as "All-City Mintie"
All-City served in the U.S. Army for two years, where he defended our country by working as the Commanding General's personal driver, and by playing golf all over Europe as a member of the Armed Forces Golf Team.
He attended UC Berkeley, where he belonged to the Zeta Psi fraternity, in addition to many honorary societies, including Skull and Keys, Beta Beta, Winged Helmet and Triune.
He graduated with a degree in business and entered the commercial real estate field working for Coldwell Banker, and later, as a partner, in Nelson Peterson.
H also partnered with Burt Damner in their own firm Damner Newell, and later worked for BlackRock as a consultant.
Minton was an avid golfer and held memberships in the San Francisco Golf Club and the Burlingame Country Club. He was very competitive on the golf course, and somehow managed to play his best game when he and his partner were in the toughest matches. Minton is remembered by many By Area golf clubs, where he and his member-partner almost always came away with the lion's share of the money.
Married for 58 years to Manisse Kollowratek Newell, a noted floral designer and party planner. The two had three children: Minton Jr. (Jay), Peter and Michael.
He is, also, survived by his brother, Peter, of Walnut Creek, his sister Anne Callaway, of Davis, two daughters-in-law, Shannon and Julie, and three grandchildren, Joseph (Joey), Minton III (Minton) and MacKenzie.
A private family celebration is planned.
