Mitchell Davies Obituary

Mitchell (Mickey)
Vasilatos Davies Passed away peacefully on January 28, 2013 in San Francisco at the age of 93. He was born in this City on May 19, 1919 to Sophia and Anthony Vasilatos and attended Galileo High School and the University of Oregon, Eugene, where he was a cheerleader. He was part of the Greatest Generation, serving his country in the South Pacific in WWII. He married Ethel Christopher in 1949 and together they raised three sons. Mickey worked in the dairy industry for his entire career and became president of Christopher Dairy when his brother in law, George Christopher, was elected Mayor of San Francisco. When the dairy was sold to Berkeley Farms in 1970, Mickey remained on as General Manager of the San Francisco plant for another 30 plus years, finally retiring at the age of 83. One of Mickey's proudest achievements was forming the Junior 49er Club which gave free admission to 49er games to generations of local boys and girls for over 53 years. He was honored by the 49ers on the field on the Club's 50th Anniversary. Mickey was a proud member of the Big 6, a group of his oldest friends who met weekly for over 60 years to enjoy each other's company and plan their annual fishing trips. He was also a 54 year member of the Olympic Country Club. Mickey traveled and enjoyed life like a man half his age, remaining lively and gregarious to the end, an inspiration to all of us who were lucky enough to accompany him. He was known as a warm and loyal friend and will always be remembered for his smile.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel Davies, son Michael Davies and daughter-in- law Rosemarie, son Christopher Davies and daughter-in- law Diane, grandchildren Alexis and Austin, and sisters-in-law Helen Christopher and Beatrice Tentes. He was pre-deceased by his son James and granddaughter Michelle.

Friends are invited to attend the Trisagion Service 7 PM Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 at HALSTED N. GRAY - CAREW & ENGLISH, 1123 Sutter St., SF. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 AM Friday, Feb 1, 2013 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 999 Brotherhood Way, SF. Interment Greek Orthodox Cemetery.

Dear Ethel and Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Mickey was, and always will be, a wonderful human being. We consider ourselves blessed to have met him that November day in 2010 when the four of us had drinks at your home. That same day, a couple of hours later, we became engaged. It is a sweet memory to recall that time together with you was also the beginning of our lives together. We loved Mickey's humor and loving presence. He and you will be forever in our hearts!

Dear Davies & Christophers: Although I never actually met Mickey, he was and always will be one of my boyhood heroes. 3 words describe why: Christopher Milk Club. As an active member of the Junior 49er Club, I have nothing but treasured memories of going to Kezar with my best friend and his Dad to all the 49er home games. We would hang by the Niner tunnel after the game and try to get autographs. We actually talked to John Brodie and asked him how his arm was (He was wearing a cast.

I was never able to do this until now,so,THANK YOU Mr. Davies for all the cherished childhood memories that paved the way for me to be a true 49er fan!

God Bless & GO NINERS!

Dear Ethel, Michael and Chris, I don't have to tell you how special of a man Mickey was and how the world will never be the same without him. I will never forget him going down a water slide with my children when he was 83 years old. He defied age barriers and was always ready to have a good time with young and old. I feel so fortunate to have had him as a friend. I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. My deepest sympathies,

Pat Cruz
