Mostyn Thomas Lloyd of Rhayader, Wales died peacefully in his home in San Mateo California on August 1, 2024 at the age of 95 due to complications from cancer.
Born in the Welsh hill town of Rhayader next to the Elan Valley, Mostyn was noted for his intelligence and intellect at school, being selected for advanced education.
He joined Barclay's Bank at 15 years old as a clerk and served in a number of branches in Wales, demonstrating he had what it took to succeed. He served in the British Army at Port Said after World War II. Upon his return he met his future wife, Susan Huxley, at a Young Farmers Dance in Shrewsbury, England.
Mostyn and Susan became engaged and then he was asked to serve overseas in Ghana in West Africa. Serving for 10 years in Ghana, he brought his new wife, Susan, after 2 years and his sons in the final 2 years. In Ghana, he showed his entrepreneurial spirit when he hosted Saturday night dances at a tennis court with the lights powered by his relocated residence's generator. Those who had Barclays Bank Account Books got in for free, while all others had to pay. There followed a sharp uptake in new accounts.
After 10 years in Africa, Mostyn was offered a transfer to Barclays California in San Franscico with the family settling in San Rafael. Another 8 years brought another change; this time to Toronto, starting a new commercial bank for Barclays in the financial center of Canada. During this time, he completed the prestigious Harvard University Advanced Management Program in 1976. Mostyn returned to California as President of Barclays California in 1982 before ending his banking career overseeing loans for Barclays North America out of Wall Street. He had an innate sense of loan financing and had the highest signing authority in Barclays Bank for loans.
Retiring with Sue back to California in San Mateo, Mostyn joined the British American Chamber of Commerce Northern California serving as Executive Director from 1990 to 2006 and was a driving force in bringing their primary funding source at the time, the Annual Christmas Lunch attendance from a mere 200 people to the 1000 that it is today. Mostyn did this by combining his financial acumen and his hobby, travelling, together. The prize offerings at the lunch were impressive world-spanning trips and adventures. Both at Barclays and the Chamber, Mostyn enjoyed mentoring young people in their career development. Through his efforts to support trade between Britain and the United States, he received the Order of British Empire from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Place in 1998.
Never losing his passion for travel, Mostyn developed a world travel bucket list and accomplished it all with the pinnacle being a trip to the Arctic. Globe trotting turned to cruising the seas often with the full family joining him.
Mostyn Lloyd lead a full and impressive life, accomplishing much for himself, his family and his colleagues as a husband, father, son to Thomas and Edith, brother to John, uncle to Pauline and mentor to many. He is survived by his wife Susan, sons Andrew and Edward, daughter-in-law, Lina, son-in-law, Denis and grandson Samuel.
