Nadine Schendel Obituary

Nadine Jane Schendel 95, died peacefully on May 24, 2008 surrounded by the warm embrace of her family. She was born in San Francisco in 1913 to the late Helen and Martin Gray. She is the sister of the late Barbara Chatham. After graduating from Lowell High School in 1931, Nadine went to work at the White House Department store in San Francisco where this great beauty modeled on a regular basis. In 1936 she married her childhood "crush," the late William Schendel. They lived in San Francisco and later moved to San Carlos. Together they shared 46 years full of joy and adventure with many friends and family. Nadine is survived by their four children and their spouses: Barbara and Bill Gassenberg of Pioneer, William (Bill) and Leila Schendel of Modesto, Nadine and Tony Bertoglio of Albuquerque, and Jacqueline and Jim Hubbard of Carmel. She was the proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Nadine was an active member of the San Carlos Garden Club for nearly 35 years and held many elected offices. She volunteered at The Family Tree for many years and was a dedicated parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church for almost a half century. She was renowned for her Toll House Cookies which can never be duplicated. Everyone who knew Nadine saw the true meaning of what it is to be a lady, the likes of which are rare today. She leaves behind a heartbroken, yet fortunate, family who shall always be inspired by her gentle kindness, beauty, strength and wisdom. Family and friends are invited to a Visitation, Sunday, June 1st at 6pm with a 7pm Vigil Service at Crippen & Flynn Carlmont Chapel, 1111 Alameda de las Pulgas, Belmont, CA. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 2nd, 10am at St. Charles Catholic Church, 880 Tamarack in San Carlos, CA. www.crippenflynn.com

Our hearts are saddened by Aunt Nadine's passing. She had a great life and gave us all the inspiration for what life is about. The "Gray sisters" will be missed tremendously.
Dianna and I are on the road working and unable to attend the services in person. Our love and thoughts are with you all in mind.
