September 8, 1938 - February 20, 2018
Norman Tyler Larson, 79 of San Francisco passed away peacefully in the presence of comforting family on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. Norm was born on September 8, 1938. He was the 4th generation of Larsons born in San Francisco. His childhood was spent growing up with his younger brother, Steve, and parents, Kay and Roy, in the San Francisco area. He graduated valedictorian from Willow Glen High School in San Jose. He received a full academic Alfred P. Sloan scholarship to attend Stanford, University. He graduated from Stanford with a degree in Economics. Yet to develop a full vision for his life at age 22, he decided to continue his educational journey at Harvard where he earned a Law degree. Somewhere along this journey through law school and a tour with the California Air National Guard, Norm decided practicing law, and as he put it, "a series of career failures" was a deductive way of developing his eventual career vision. He was very proud to speak of his time in the Middle-East during the late 1960's to 1978, where he taught English as a second language to military personnel. He learned Arabic in Cairo and taught in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Norm was teaching in Iran at the time of the Islamic Republic revolution. He narrowly escaped the country as the Persian Dynasty fell to the Grand Ayatollah. He returned to San Francisco in late 1978 where he established his full time career as property owner and landlord. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Norm was an amazing guy. He had a big heart and enjoyed all things that were romantic and beautiful. I met Norm in 1992 at the age of 23, and he allowed me the opportunity to open a business that thrived for 13 years in one of his store fronts. With his big heart he gave me the opportunity to start my own business with $300 in my bank account. It became profitable on day two, and lasted strong for 13 years until we sold the business. Thank you Norm. Your big heart, smile and laugh will be missed.

Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. Norm was one of a kind. I saw him enthusiastic at concerts, the opera and at lectures at the Legion of Honor and the Deyoung Museum. His excitement at his Haight home being accepted as a San Francisco landmark was as infectious as his smile. I had the pleasure of being given a personal tour some time ago. What fun to share his excitement of all he'd done with his home.
The first time I saw Norm, I thought he was one of the Smith Brothers of the boxed cough drops of my childhood come to life. He delighted me even more after we met and I got to know him through the American Decorative Arts Forum and at SF Prrformances and the SF Opera.
Norm was a Champagne bottle of bubbles and always had a smile on his dear face. He will be missed.

I have rented from Norman since 1985. My 7 year bookstore lease was over& there was no possibility for renewal.i remember his exact words when he approached me : I see what you are doing. I've recently purchased a storefront across the street. The space is smaller but it is on the sunny side of the street.
This was a game changer for me with a 5 year old daughter& a wife.
I'll miss most about Norman is chatting as he pruned the vine above the store windows or how important it was to be stewards of the corner, ie keep it as clean & litter free as possible.
Talking to him as he cleaned then painted over the graffiti tags on his wall , he was cheerful, upbeat, responsible.
I don't think you ever get over losing someone you have known for a long time. It will take me some time to get used to this reality.
