Paul Armstrong Obituary

Paul Armstrong

October 9, 1922 - January 17, 2015

It is with a very heavy heart and an unspeakable sense of loss that we mourn the passing of Paul Armstrong, 93, on January 17, 2015 following a brief illness.

Paul was born in Los Angeles on October 9, 1922 to Minnie and Paul Armstrong and was raised with his four siblings in Burlingame, California. At Burlingame High School, he was active in sports and music and earned his treasured Eagle Scout award. Paul attended San Jose State, where he earned his teaching credential followed by a Master's degree in Administration and Education from Stanford University. His education was interrupted by military service in WWII where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Purple Heart.

Paul was a respected teacher, coach, counselor, vice-principal, ending his career as principal of Hillsdale High School in San Mateo. In 1983, he came out of retirement to supervise student teachers for nine years at San Francisco State.

Paul's greatest loves were his wife of 69 years, Barbara, daughters Terry Tringali (Joe), Robin Kurotori (Craig), four grandchildren, a great-granddaughter, friends and golf. He was an active member of SIRs and the Olde Knights Club. Paul was honored to be inducted into the sports Hall of Fame at Burlingame High School. At the time of his passing, Paul was eagerly planning and looking forward to a cruise with his entire family, a tradition that he and Barbara began 30 years ago to celebrate milestone anniversaries.

Paul was an extraordinary man who deeply touched the lives of all who knew him. He never lost his sense of humor, calling dialysis "the distillery"; loved Pismo Beach and the Stanislaus River and cherished his family above all else. He will be greatly missed, but our memories of him are rich and full. We all know how blessed we were to be his family.

Per Paul's request, there will be no formal funeral service. Donations may be made to the Hillsdale High School Foundation Scholarship Program, in honor of Paul Armstrong, 63 Bovet Road, Suite 218, San Mateo, CA 94402.
